attack on Iraq
Jan. 8, 1997: Lithuanian Government
resigns
Jan 16, 1991: Gulf War begins.
U.S. begans the air war against Iraq by bombing military sites.
Feb. 24,1991: Ground war in
southern Iraq and Kuwait begins. In a brilliant and lightning fast
campaign, U.S. and coalition forces smash through Iraq's defenses and deafeat
Saddam Hussein's troups in only four days of combat.
Feb. 26, 1991: Allies enter
Kuwait City.
Feb. 7, 1991: Liberal priest becomes
Haiti's president.
Feb. 25, 1991: Warsaw Pact
dissolves military alliance.
March 3, 1991: Allied and
Iraq military leaders meet on the battlefield to discuss terms for a formal
cease-fire to end the Gulf War. Iraq agrees to abide by all of the
U.N. resolutions.
March 4, 1991: The first Allied
prisoners of war are released.
April 1, 1991: Supreme Court
limits race in trial jury selection.
April 6, 1991: Official cease-fire
of the Gulf War is signed.
April 15, 1991: Europeans
end sanctions on South Africa.
April 16, 1991: Supreme Court
limits death row appeals.
May 13, 1991: Winnie Mandela
sentenced in kidnapping incident.
June 4, 1991: Communist government
of Albania resigns.
June 4, 1991: Jiang Qing,
widow of Mao Tse Tung, commits suicide.
June 5, 1991: South African
parliment repeals apartheid laws.
July 1, 1991: Warsaw Pact
disolved.
July 10, 1991: Boris Yeltsin
inaugurated as first freely elected president of Russian Republic.
July 31, 1991: Bush-Gorbachev
summit negotiates strategic arms reduction treaty.
Aug. 18, 1991: Coup fails
to unseat Gorbachev after Soviet hardliners try to take power. Gorbachev
credit Yeltsin for rescue.
Aug. 24, 1991: Gorbachev seals
the Communist Party doom by resigning as secretary general.
Aug. 25, 1991: 3 Batic states
declare independence.
Sept. 2, 1991: Bush recognizes
Batic States.
Sept. 6, 1991: New Soviet
ruling counsel recognizes the independence of Lithuania, Estonia, and Lativa.
Sept. 15, 1991: Charges against
Oliver North's role in Iran Contra are dropped.
Oct. 6, 1991: Professor Anita
Hill accuses Judge Clarence Thomas of sexual harassment.
Oct. 15, 1991: Senate, 52-48
confirms Thomas for Supreme Court after stormy hearings.
Oct. 18, 1991: Israel and
Soviets resume relations after 24 years.
Oct. 29, 1991: First photo
ever taken of an asteroid in space.
Nov. 15, 1991: U.S. indict
2 Libyans in 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland.
Nov. 18, 1991: Terry Waite
and Thomas M. Sutherland freed by Lebanese.
Dec. 2-4, 1991: Last three
U.S. hostages freed in Lebanon.
Dec. 25, 1991: Soviet Union
breaks up after President Gorbachev's resignation; constituent republics
form Commonweath of Independent Sates, which U.S. and other nations move
to recognize.
