Jan. 18, 1983: Jim Thorpe's Olympic gold metals are post-humously returned to him in  Los Angeles
Feb. 24, 1983:  Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip arrive in San Deigo, their first stop in a non-stop tour of the U.S.
March 2, 1983:  Final episode of M*A*S*H draws an estimated 125 million viewers
March 23, 1983:  Reagan proposes "Star Wars" defense system
April 4, 1983:  Space Shuttle Challenger makes a successful maiden voyage with the first U.S. space walk in nine years
May 3, 1983:  U.S. Bishops denounce the testing, manufacture, and deployment of nuclear weapons
May 28, 1983: Pioneer 10 Spacecraft launched March 3, 1972, crosses the orbit of Neptune and departs the planetary solar system
June 18, 1983:  Sally Ride bcomes the first U.S. woman astronaut in space as a crew member aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger
August 30, 1983:  A South Korean Boeing 747 jetliner bound for Seoul apparently strays off course into Soviet air space and is shot down by a Soviet SU-15 fighter after it had tracked the airliner for 2 hours.  All 269 people aboard are killed including 61 Americans.
October 23, 1983:  Terrorist explosion kills 237 U.S. Marines in Beirut.
October 24, 1983:  U.S. and Caribbean Allies invade Grenada
December 10, 1983:  Lech Walesa's wife accepts his Nobel Peace Prize
