God's Reign
Written by: Karissa (January 1999)
A warm, inconspicuous breeze blew gently through the eager crowd; the blazing sun's
rays shone down upon them like an angel reaching from the heavens. Twenty thousand
kids, all waiting for the concert to begin, chatted incessantly. Standing in the
middle of the crowd, I was unable to see the stage. I looked to the sky, allowing
the light to warm my face and I closed my eyes.
Suddenly, the rich sounds of a guitar filled the air. Everyone's attention was
diverted toward the proscenium as the wind carried the wild squeals upward. The
beat of the drums shook the ground as the vibrations ran throughout my entire body,
my heart pulsating with the rhythm. A voice shot out over the music, "DO YOU LOVE
JESUS?!" The barbarous crowd cheered energetically as the song continued. No one
noticed the raven black clouds looming beyond the horizon.
As the song ended, the sky darkened, it was as though an amoral spell had been cast
upon us. Birds scattered as thunder rolled across the sky. Lightning flashed and
cracked as it stuck a metal flagpole. Ecstatic screams turned to screams of terror
as everyone ran for cover. God was among us; he came like a mighty rushing wind and
showed his eminent power to us all. Lightning struck the ground amid the crowd and
the sky grew darker still. Rain poured from above by the bucket-full, drenching
those still caught outside.
I found shelter under a circular building being held up by six vault-like structures.
A fountain stood uncovered in the center of the building. When the raindrops hit, the
water rippled as though it was shaking with terror. Lightning shot down through the
hollow center of the building toward the fountain and the wind blew ferociously,
carrying chairs and canopy umbrellas through the air weightlessly. I huddled in the
archway and waited. Shivering from the cold, I huddled closer to my friends and we
prayed that the storm would soon come to an end.
A voice sounded from across the terrace. It soon occurred to me that the voice was
singing "Awesome God". I joined in along with my friends and soon everyone under the
building was singing. The wind picked up, the lightning flashed wildly and the thunder
roared, but we kept singing. As the storm intensified, so did our song.
And then, it was finished. The storm disappeared as fast as it had come. The sun's
golden rain beamed down upon us and God smiled. We rejoiced as we stepped out from
our sanctuary. Our song continued as we marched back to our hotels, and the song will
endure forever. Our God truly is an awesome God.
