Historical Hill Documents




Many of the men from this line of Hills went on to become important figures in Texas history. The following document copies were obtained from the Texas State Library and Archives Commission, 1201 Brazos Street, P.O. Box 12927, Austin, Texas 78711-2927


Discharge papers for Asa Collinsworth Hill from Company F, Frontier Forces, January 24, 1871. He held the rank of Lieutenant. It shows the pay due him including money for an overcoat and four blankets.


Second page of A.C. Hill's discharge papers showing his final pay of $490.00, after deductions for indebtedness, including $30 for one Winchester carbine.


Oath of Office paper signed by John Christopher Columbus Hill when he became the Spanish translator for the Texas General Land Office and Mexico, January 21, 1895.

It is interesting to note that it reads in part "I, being a citizen of this State, have not fought a duel with deadly weapons, within this State nor out of it, nor have I sent or accepted a challenge to fight a duel with deadly weapons, nor have I acted as a second carrying a challenge, or aided, advised or assisted any person thus offending..."


Copy of old photograph of John Christopher Columbus Hill and his business card which says: "John C.C. Hill, Mining Engineer and Assayor. Graduate of the "Mineria," 1851, School of Engineers, City of Mexico. Monterey de Nuevo Leon, P. O. Box 51."


Listing of Bounty and Donation Land Grants of Texas; 1835-1888, showing James Monroe Hill having received 640 acres on July 10, 1838 for being in the Battle of San Jacinto.


Republic of Texas Pension Application Abstracts showing James Monroe Hill, Jeffrey Barksdale Hill, and John Christopher Columbus Hill having been approved for pensions later in life for having served in the Mexican War.

It is noted that Jeffrey "was severely wounded in the thigh by a musket ball which disabled him for 4 or 5 years" and that he "was taken prisoner at the battle and held at Perote."


Roster for the 1st Regiment, Texas Volunteers, Company H, where James Monroe Hill served under Col. Edward Burlison. James M. Hill's name appears third from the bottom on this hand written roster in the elegant script of the day.


Muster Roll of Texas Military Unit, John A. Veatch's Company, composed of personnel recruited primarily in Tyler County. Dated January 27, 1848. Mustered into federal service on October 23, 1847. Mustered out of federal service on September 20, 1848. The name of Asa C. Hill, age 24, appears fourth from the bottom, #45 on the list of Privates.


Hill lavalier, a hand painted miniature on ivory of one of the Hill gentlemen who lived in the 1700's in North Carolina. Framed with gold oval form to be worn as a lavalier or on a chain. "Mama Hill" (Amelia Williams, second wife of Wm. Carroll Andrew Jackson Hill) handed it down to her youngest daughter, Laura Hill Brady, who handed it down to her daughter, Marie Brady Hunter, currently 94 yr. old, in whose possession it still resides.
