The Slaton Family Genealogy

* Names in red indicate direct line of descent. Spelling of this surname is often found as Sladden/Slatton/Slatten/Slaten/Slaton/Slayton.

PLEASE NOTE: The first two generations listed here of Wade Hampton Slatton I and Wade Hampton Slaton II are NOT yet proven. It is based on the ongoing research of Clinton Slayton and others, but is strictly conjecture at this point in time. Starting with Wade Hampton Slaton III, b. 1824 and his wife, Sarah Druscilla Wright, the data is proven. I list it here so that others may use it as a springboard for their own research.

WADE HAMPTON SLATTON I, b. 1780 in Surry, NC, and d. 1864 in Jackson Co., GA. He married MARY "POLLY" ELROD, daughter of Peter ELROD and Sue WAGGONER.

Between Nov. 1807 and Sept. 1846 there are numerous land transactions and deeds recorded for Wade in Pendleton Co. and Anderson Co., SC, as well as Jackson Co., GA. His will is dated March 11, 1861 in Jackson Co., GA. (Will book B, pg. 100) It is said his ancestry can be traced back to Henry SLADDEN, b. 1400, Kent, England and to William SLATTON of VA in 1695, b. in Dover, Kent, England.

Wade and Mary show up on the 1850 and 1860 census for Marshall Co., AL with many of their twelve children. Wade is buried on the old 40 acre farm of his brother, Loven Slaton, where there used to be about 25 family graves. Unfortunately there are no longer any signs of the graves there.

LOVEN PERRY SLATON, b. 1804, Pendleton District, SC; d. abt. 1865, AL. Married Mary Ann Clardy abt. 1823 in Anderson, SC.

MARIAH SLATON, b. 1810, m. Samuel Walker. Note: There is an unamed child on the census record born in 1810 to Wade Hampton Slatton and Mary Elrod. Per Quentin Alexander, a descendent of Mariah Slaton and Samuel Walker, family history has held that Mariah Slaton, born 1810, was the sister of George Washington Slaton. Both families (Walkers and Slatons) moved to Monroe Co., TN at about the same time, ca. 1830. Still seeking definitive proof through land, probate or marriage records, but it appears Mariah was the child of Wade H. and Mary, sister to Wade H. II, Geo. Washington, and Loven Perry Slaton.

Willis was an active Mason in Bennington, OK. He attained the highest degree (33rd) within the Masonic Order and served five years as Treasurer of Bennington Lodge #19, and as head of the Lodge in 1902-03. Records show that Lodge 19 was "arrested" Jan. 9, 1944, which means it no longer exists. Records are now kept at the Grand Lodge of Oklahoma, 102 S. Broad St., Guthrie, OK 73044. After the death of his first wife, Willis Sams Slaton remarried about a year later to an Indian woman, Janie LABOR, daughter of Houston Labor, in Bennington, OK. He and Janie had no children together. When Willis died in 1909, his children scattered; the older ones left home, some went to live with relatives, and the youngest went to the Masonic Orphanage.

Mollie Bingham was the daughter of Elijah Arnold Bingham, b. In November of 1999 the family photocopied many handwritten letters from "Aunt Elizabeth" to her niece, Willie Lorene(Slaton)Golden of Dallas, TX. The letters, kept by Lorene for more than 30 years, tell of the Slaton, Binghams and Lightfoot families' early lives in Oklahoma and Texas and have been invaluable in helping piece together parts of the family history. My thanks to cousin Carol Golden of Mesquite, TX for allowing us to copy these letters and add to the continuing Slaton genealogy.
