In Loving Memory...
On May 26, 1993, my sister and I lost our sons, Michael and Scott, who were more like brothers than cousins. They were killed together, along with Mike's old yellow dog, Gunner, when their vehicle hit a soft shoulder in the remote Alaska wilderness and plunged into a lake. They were avid outdoorsmen and were on a week long camping and fishing trip.
In dealing with this loss, I wrote the following poem shortly after their deaths in remembrance. Not a day goes by that we do not think of them. The pipe music on this page has special meaning for us; we had a lone piper play "Amazing Grace" at their service as we laid them to rest side by side.
The Drummer & The Dreamer
There was a young musician
Who played the drums and sang
He had a faithful yellow dog
Old Gunner was his name
The drummer had a cousin
Who played the pipes and drew
He read of knights in days of old
A dreamer through and through
The drummer's name was Michael
He loved the ships at sea
His cousin, Scott, the dreamer's name
Loved mining equally
Both men loved the out-of-doors
To camp, to hike and fish
Through winter's months they planned a trip
In May they got their wish
Off they went with poles and dog
To have a week of fun
They made their camp, they pitched their tent
And watched the midnight sun
The week was filled with hiking
Exploring mining sites
They fished for hours beside the lake
Built campfires late at night
On the last day of their trip
The day dawned bright and clear
They drove along the crystal lake
With dog and fishing gear
The road was rough and narrow
They made a fateful turn
In just an instant, all were lost
The three did not return
Now they fish in heaven's streams
No limits where they go
The drummer, Mike, the dreamer, Scott,
With yellow dog in tow
In memory of their short lives
We ask of you today
To say a prayer for Mike and Scott
This twenty-sixth of May
