Rueben served in the Union Army. His right arm was shot off in one of the battles. When the Civil war was ended he came home, and he and Hattie Darling Healy were married. She died when their son Harvey A. was only six weeks old. A short time later Ruben went to Kansas and took up a soldiers claim. When Harvey was about eight years old he and his father came back to Indiana, but did not remain long. They then returned to Kansas, and Ruben died in Abilene. Harvey became a druggist in Pittsburg, Kansas.
