Ellis spent most of his adult life in the Keswick community, except for the last nine years. which he spent with his daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Pete Montross of rural Millersburg. He was active in the American Legion, mayor of Keswick, and served on the school board for many years. He farmed northeast of Keswick. He operated a feed and poultry store for 20 years and later sold seed corn.
Lyman Morrison remembered:
All of the children were good athletes and Ellis was a team father; he never missed a game and was standing up cheering the whole game. He went home hoarse more than once. He had a large house in Keswick that served as a family gathering place, such as funerals and reunions.
After his marriage to Mabel, they lived near Webster for a year, then moved to a farm near White Pigeon, and later to Keswick.
Ellis commissioned the Ulter Historical Foundation in the 1970s to do some of the research into his grandfather, James' Irish origins.
