James Weathers Pierson came to Scott County in 1818 from Fleming County, Ky. In the 1820's he built one of the first mills in Vernon Township, Jackson County, Ind., at Slate Ford, east of Crothersville. He was born in 1794, the son of Shadrack and Rachel (Clinch) Pierson. Shadrack Pierson was one of triplets --- Shadrack, Mesheck, and Abednego Pierson, born in 1754, in Culpepper County, Va. During the winter at Valley Forge, Shadrack's feet were frozen, which caused him to be a cripple for the rest of his life.
James and his first wife, Lanthy, came from KY to Scott Co., IN a few years before she died (in 1826).
Descendent Mariam Cheshire also noted:
James had the big mill at Slate Ford, east of Carruthersville;
they had a big colonial house overlooking the Muscatatuck R.; James
left a will, leaving 2 pieces of property valued at $4,500, with wife
Lucretia and friend Nathan N. Morgan as executors.
James' middle name apparently comes from the maiden name, of his paternal grandmother, Sally Weathers, wife of Charles Pierson.
