George always lived near North English. He had operated a harness shop there for a while, and for 20 years before his death he operated a cafe there. After George died, Hilda continued operation of the cafe. Later on, Hilda bought and ran a hotel which she sold eight years before her death. For her last three years Hilda made her home in Des Moines so she could be near her step-daughter, Mildred.
