According to his obituary,
Fenton was a devout Catholic, with a kind and generous manner.
He came to the US at age 3, and mostly grew up in Clinton county, Iowa.
Fenton and Katherine came to Crawford county in 1875, shortly
after they married. They farmed in Jackson Township of Crawford County.
The farm Fenton founded there in 1875 was designated a ``Century Farm''
(for being in the same family for 100 years)
and was owned by William C. Lawler in 1976.
According to a biography in the 1978 St. Ann's parish centennial
book, Fenton came to Jackson Township in 1876 and settled on a farm
and ``Later that fall he returned to eastern Iowa where he and
Katherine (Kate) were married at Villa Nova. They came out to there
new home in a spring-seat wagon. (The running gears of this wagon are
now in the possession of Francis Lawler).'' However, that 1876 year
and the season of fall for their marriage don't match up with
other records, so I believe 1875 is correct.
Fenton had a fair amount of land in Jackson Township, according
to an old plat map. He owns 160 acres, the NE quarter of Section 26
(which was his home according to the 1885 census), 87 acres
east of that in Section 25, and another 160 in Section 36, as well
as part of Section 2 of Westside Twp.
