Cyril enlisted in the army Cavalry on March 14, 1928 as a private, second class. He stayed in until 3-13-31, at which time the Iowa Cavalry was disbanded. He was a Corporal when he was discharged. He had a medal for sharp-shooting and his job most of the time he was in was to break horses for the other soldiers. His granddaughter Claudette wrote that, ``Horses had broken every bone in his body. He hated horses and warned me repeatedly not to trust them. He preferred Studebakers.''
Cyril lived his whole life in Iowa, except for part of the time that he was in the Cavalry. Places he lived included Independence and Davenport. He sold insurance for Prudential for a number of years after he was discharged and he worked as a meat packer at Wilson Foods in Cedar Rapids. He probably had other jobs in between.
Bernice (Riley) Showalter said that Margaret died in childbirth. She had a caesarian and it was done at home on the kitchen table and Bernice's father helped. The Doctor said at the time that he didn't think she would live. Evidently she had never been to a doctor until the time she was going to deliver. Bernice also said that Margaret was buried at St. Patrick's Cemetery in St. Cecelia where Harold is buried.
The Farrell Family History has the year of death of Margaret and the infant twins as 1930 instead of 1926. RL Showalter had 1926 and I had 1926 from somewhere else also.
