After this, he and his family moved around a lot. It seems that 4 years in one place was about the limit for them. Tom and John Shannon and 2 or 3 other relatives went up around New Hampton as it was supposed to be easier to find a farm to rent. This would have been in about 1909 because John's daughter Regina was born in Clinton County in December of 1908 and John's mother's 1910 obituary lists him as living in Elma, Iowa. He's also in the 1910 census in Howard Township of Howard County as a farmer there, with Teresa and their seven children. Elma is also where John's sister-in-law Elizabeth (Farrell) Showalter and her family settled (but I don't know who went there first). His daughter Mary Teresa went to elementary school in New Hampton and said that they left New Hampton because of the short growing season. They lost some crops because of early frost. That was before hybrid corn and you needed about 120 days. John's daughter Loretta (born 1894) graduated from New Hampton high school.
The John Shannon family was listed as living in Fillmore township, Iowa county, near Parnell, in the census taken January 20, 1920. Lyman Morrison (John's grandson) thought John and family must have moved to Keota that year as Mary Teresa (John's daughter, Lyman's mother) went to high school in Keota, graduating in 1924. The family moved to a farm northeast of Keswick about 1925. This is where they lived when Mary Teresa Shannon met her husband, Forrest Morrison. That was just 1/4 mile from where Lyman and Helen Morrison were born. John and family spent his last 14 years in Keokuk County.
Lyman Morrison wrote the following memories of John Shannon in 1994: I have very little memory of Grandpa Shannon. I can remember his mustache and that he worked a team of mules. They lived on a farm on the east city limits of Sigourney when he passed away. I can remember staying overnight there for the funeral. There was about six kids in one bed and I can remember one of the older Shannon girls kicking. I don't think John did very well financially as my Grandmother was very poor. She lived a good many years with no income other than old age assistance. She was a widow for about 27 years.
