Unii's Cat Dishwasher Sign Pattern

I made this Cat Dishwasher Sign so that both of my children (ages 9 and 12) could tell if the dishes were clean or dirty. Not to mention my 9 year old empties the dishwasher when they are clean. :> I was going to actually stitch the eyes in, but Matthew, my 12 yr. old, wanted them to be wiggle eyes.

Of course you may change the colors to whatever you wish. *smiles*

Dirty Side Clean Side

Materials:

Plastic Canvas:

1 Sheet of 7 Count Plastic Canvas
* 1 Heavy Duty, Flat Circular Magnet
1 (of each) Blue and Green Wiggle Eye
Hot Glue Gun or Elmer's Glue

* See note in instructions!

Yarn:

Black
White
Grey - Pop'n Yarn Color#: A3-401 Mid Grey

Floss:

Black
White
Hot Pink

Stitches Used:

Reversed Continental Stitch (\)
Continental Stitch (/)
Back Stitch
Overcast

Instructions:

     * NOTE: Please read instructions thoroughly before beginning.

     * NOTE: For the magnet, I just popped one off of the back of an old heavy duty kitchen refrigerator magnet. It doesn't have to be mega-powerful, just enough to hold it on the dishwasher when fully finished.

First, cut 2 pieces of Plastic Canvas 27x35 Threads. Continue by cutting the shape from the pattern below of Piece A. Cut Piece B out of the other. I found it easier to cut one piece first, then flip it over and use it as a pattern to cut the second.

Next, fill entire pattern of Piece A (Dirty Cat Body) with Reversed Continental Stitches (\) in Black Yarn, leaving outer edges UNSTITCHED. When done, repeat process with Piece B (Clean Cat Body) but using White yarn and Continental Stitches (/), leaving outer edges UNSTITCHED.

Continue by following the pattern below and Backstitching in White Floss on Piece A for the word "DIRTY", whiskers, leg, and tail. Backstitch the inner ear, nose and mouth in Hot Pink Floss. Following the pattern below, Backstitch in Black Floss on Piece B for the word "CLEAN", whiskers, leg, and tail. Backstitch the inner ear, nose and mouth in Hot Pink Floss.

Then, Overcast stitch the wrong sides of Pieces A and B together, lining them up, with Grey yarn. When half way done overcasting, insert magnet between the two layers. Finish overcasting the rest of the way.

Finally, Hot glue or Elmer's glue the Green Wiggle Eye to Piece A where the Green * is on the pattern. Hot glue or Elmer's glue the Blue Wiggle Eye to Piece B where the Green * is on the pattern.

Kathy Pyles had to make an adaptation to the pattern, due to a lack of a magnetic dishwasher. Here's what she said to do:

I loved your cat pattern. I love cats! I had to make some changes though. There was not any metal on my dishwasher! I took a magnet off my refrigerator and tried to put it on the dishwasher and it would not stick anywhere!

I stitched it together without a magnet inside, put a coiled metal (cheap kind) key ring in the top of the ear, attached a large fishing swivel to that, cut about a 7 inch length of white wire coat hanger, bent one end into a loop and attached the other end of the fishing swivel before closing the loop, and then bent the coat wire hanger about 4 inches from the end. There are air vents at the top left hand side of the dishwasher and I was able to slide the straight end of the hook behind the air vent bars. The fishing swivel allows me to turn the cat without taking it off the dishwasher. My version looks like a hook earring (looks like a shepherd's hook) only in a 20XL size!
