Curtis Kapers: One of my dad's brothers began the search for our ancestors more than 35 years ago. From time-to-time, I'd ask if I could get a copy of our "family tree." A few years after Uncle Vern passed away I was presented with a cardboard box full of notes. Much of what he had written down was in pencil and had faded over the years. Enhancing the data on a copier did not even help.
Holton History: According to Uncle Vern's notes,
When Aunt Eleanor passed away, I was given more family history. While most of hers was written in ink, it still did not solve the biggest mystery in our family -- who are the parents of Luther James Curtis? With the help of Ancestry.com, that mystery has been solved. In the 1860 census, Richard M, Susan, Luther and Anna Curtis were residing in Jackson (Lee County), Iowa.
You may notice that at times there are generations listed with no data on file. That means that I do have some information on those individuals, but do not have verification to prove that they belong in my database."There are several spellings to the Holeton name: Holton, ***Halton, Houlton, Holeton, etc. All seem to be "relatives" that migrated from Sweden. There is quite a bit of historical information about the "Holton" family. Some points of interest are:
1) A Captain Holton sailed and commanded Her Majesty's ship Enterprise from Sandy Hook, New Jersey to England in 1762. This was quite a large vessel with many cannon.
2) Another less fortunate Holton was "Peter". He could not imagine a handful of settlers winning the Revolutionary War so he sided with the British. As a result, the rebels confiscated all his property. Several actions were taken after the war's end and he eventually got part of his sizeable estate back."
3) In Trenton there is a St. Michaels P.E. Church which was built in 1819. (An earlier church existed on the site in 1748.) In the small attached burial ground is the grave of a child of about two years named Pauline Joseph Ann Holton. She was the daughter of Joseph Bonaparte and the Beautiful Annette Savage. Joseph was the former king of Spain and was, at that time, ambassador to the United States. His official title was Count de Serveillers. For some reason he was not popular in New Jersey society!
Annette was working in her mother's store in Philadelphia when Bonaparte first met her. She supposedly sold him a pair of suspenders. At any rate, despite having a wife back in Spain, he "appropriated" Ann and built a mansion for her in Trenton. The daughter was born but died about 2 years later (around 1820). Society snubbed this marriage of convenience so much that the good Count decided to take her to New York where he built another mansion for her and laid out the town of Diana around it. The romance ended in 1830 when a revolution in France sent the Count back to Europe and his former queen. Ann subsequently married a Frenchman and built another store in Watertown, New York."
Please note! The above information is taken directly from Uncle Vern's notes. His findings are undocumented and should be treated as such. My apology to descendants of the Bonaparte family. Yes, *Annette Savage did have a special relationship with Joseph. But, as far as I know, Joseph was well-liked everywhere, including New Jersey! And yes, I know that Joseph lived in the states beyond the year 1830. As mentioned, these were my uncles notes and have no known validation.
A well-known saying here in the West is that one should not let the truth get in the way of a good story! Since my uncle passed away several years ago, I have no way of finding out why he wrote as he did. There is some evidence that he was starting work on an historical novel. Maybe these were just notes to make his "novel" more interesting. The best I can figure, our connection to the Savage family is that my grandmother's sister, Myrtle HOLETON, married Jehiles Savage. What relationship (if any) Annette was to Jehiles, is unknown.
***Did you know that the Origin of the name is Halton from one of two sources ?
The name was documented in England during the Roman occupation of Lancashire.
Also an Alfred De Altona was executed for horse stealing in London in 1095 his family adopted the spelling in the 12th Century of Halton.
There is also reference to a Halton arriving in Sweden sometime in the late 17th century His family later founded a large Global company.Andy Halton (1/25/2001)

"AT the dwelling-house of the subscriber, at Bow-Hill Farm1 near Trenton, on Friday the 13th of March, sundry handsome blooded horses, mares and colts; also some horned cattle and sheep. . . . . . . . . . . "
"1 Probably the same farm, subsequently purchased at the close of the Revolution by the wealthy merchant, Barnt De Klyn, and by him rented to Joseph Bonaparte, ex-King of Spain. It was at Bow Hill that Annette Savage resided, famous for her liaison with Joseph. See "Historic Houses of New Jersey," p. 277. W. Jay Mills."
Ever since I began this most fascinating hobby, it has been pointed out (on several occasions) that, given all the ancestor cousins that married on both sides of my family, it is amazing that I can tie my own shoes! Most times I refer to this adventure as, "ALL AKIMBO, but I Can Still Tie My Shoes." (Sub-title, "Mommy, Where Did I Come From?") Somebody thought I should call this endeavor, "So That's Why!"You want to know about me? Not much to tell. Nearly everything I have done professionally has been computer-related. Started working as a keypunch operator in 1966, progressed through the various modes and versions of word processing equipment, then on to the PC. My current title at work is "Administrative Assistant" (usually defined as doing whatever it takes to keep the office running and/or what nobody else wants to do). In addition to regular administrative duties, I currently maintain internal web sites (not linkable to WWW).
Any notations about four frogs and my life refer to my four attempts at marriage. <G> You know, "Before you meet the handsome prince, you have to kiss a lot of frogs."
