My Holeton Family History
(For privacy purposes, 20th Century data is minimal. Contact me for possible additional details on information after 1900.) You may notice that at times there are generations listed with no data on file. That means that I do have some information on those individuals, but do not have verification to prove that they belong in my database.

Update:
On January 5, 2005 "cousin" Susy sent the following information:
I have received some data that takes our Holetons back another generation. I have Nicholas Linmeyer Holeton's parents as James and Christine (Linmeyer) Holeton. I have found birth records for Christine Linmeyer in the Moravian Church records in New Jersey. She was born March 27, 1748 in Piles Grove, West Jersey, daughter of Christopher and Anna Linmeyer. James was born August 17, 1745, in Maryland and died Feb. 27, 1796. James and Christine married on January 22, 1770 in Trinity Episcopal Church at Swedesboro, Gloucester County, New Jersey.
They had the following children: Richard Holeton, b.12-6-1770; James Holeton, b. 12-2-1772; Nicholas L. Holeton, b. 11-20-1774; Mary Holeton, b. 12-1-1776; Christine Holeton, b. 7-29-1779; Anna Holeton, b. 12-29-1780; Christopher Holeton, b.7-29-1784; John Holeton,
b. 11-10-1785; Francis Henry Holeton, b. 11-24-1788; William Holeton, b. 11-26-1791
On the info I received it states that these were among the prominent old Finnish colonists that belonged to the Moravian Church. Well we always thought these ancestors were Swedes so I went looking at the history books again and found that in a good part of the 1700s, Sweden consisted of all of Sweden, all of Finland, half of Norway, parts of the Baltic Countries & Poland & Germany. The Baltic Ocean was a like a giant Swedish lake. So we could have been Swedish Fins or Finnish Swedes or whatever. There was actually a "New Sweden" colony for a time on this continent (approximately 1638 to 1713). It consisted of settlements along the Delaware River in what is now the states of New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware. I think that the Moravian Church groups came a bit later than this though. Susy
Research Notes:
The spelling of this surname is inconsistent in our family. Some spell the name HOLTON, others claim that HOLETON is the only correct spelling. My grandparents were HOLETON cousins. Uncle Vern* determined that during the early 1800's, both sides of the family may have spelled the name either way. We have found no explanation as to why an "e" was added (or sometimes removed).
In a letter of my grandmother's, she stated that she thought one of the "Frank's" went back to the HOLTON spelling.
I do not know of any connection to the HOLTON families that migrated from England. There is a theory that our ancestors may have arrived from Sweden. It is just that -- a theory. The Swedish background is so sketchy, I have chosen NOT to include it here. (Too many missing generations.)
Since I was not the person to do this original family history research, please consider the information in this database as a starting point for any research you may be doing. One of my dad's brothers (*Vernon CURTIS) began our family history research more than 35 years ago. Very little in the way of "documentation" was given to me to verify this "tree" data. There is, however, a death certificate for Silas HOLETON, issued Woodbine, Iowa. I also have a few of Vern's hand written notes (taken while he was at libraries) and some personal letters from his mother and aunt (my grandmother and great-aunt).
In 1998, a HOLETON cousin sent me additional information. Thanks to Susy we now have names for the parents of Silas plus names for their numerous other children. Susy has filled in a lot of the missing date information and has provided some background to these ancestors, as well as our common ancestor, William Cyms HOLETON. Thank you Susy! Susy's contribution will be in the color purple. My recent changes or additions are from re-reading letters written to or notes of Uncle Vern's and will be in the color pink. (Kitty CURTIS Martin)
: A newly discovered "cousin" has contributed additional information on Jonathan! Thanks, Becky (great-grandaughter of Jonathan). Becky's data will be indicated in the color brown.

Notes from Susy: "Frank's daughter, Myrtle, being born in Washington 1885 places him here by that time. He seems to have been a widower and remarried a widow. Note 1: Uncle Vern's notes indicate that he thought Edith's mother was "Elvira" and that her last name was La Plant (from CANADA).
Note 2: In a letter (I recently found) that my grandmother (Edna) had written to Uncle Vern, she stated that her parents married quite young -- her mother, Edith, being 15 and her father, Cyms, being 19 when they married. These ages do not quite match up with the information that Susy has provided. Since my grandmother's memory was anything but good, Susy's data is probably the most accurate.
Edith and Cyms were probably 3rd or 4th cousins.
