Like the title says, it's about bats, more specifically, mutant bats. And yes, they're ill-tempered. While not quite as phony as the bats from "Hellgate", "Vampirella", and "The Laurel & Hardy Murder Case" (the last one is, by far, the most amusing), it's doubtful anyone would mistake these creatures as real live bats. Not only do they look like mutant squirrels, but they also huddle around their victims like football players before they chew them up. Furthermore, the bats alternate from being computer generated images to being puppets, and they become noticably larger whenever they're in the puppet phase! The direction from Louis Morneau--who is also responsible for "Carnosaur 2"--seems a bit schizoid: sometimes it tries to be serious, yet at other times it tries to be schlocky. Nevertheless, the cast isn't bad, and Lou Diamond Phillips plays a rather likable sheriff. Everyone else, however, is stuck playing one-dimensional characters, and poor Bob Gunton has to be a brazenly mad scientist who gets dumber and dumber until his accrued stupidity ends up costing his life. The bottom line: While "Bats" is not the worst horror movie around, it has more than its fair share of guano. |
