Starting pretty much where "Evil Dead II" has left off, "Army of Darkness" marks the third (and final?) installment of the ever-evolving Evil Dead series. The strange thing about the Evil Dead sequels is that they change the actress playing Ash's girlfriend Linda (this time it's Bridget Fonda); plus, they make the flashbacks with Linda more than a little different than what actually transpired in the prequels. Strange, very strange. Meanwhile, Ash grows funnier and funnier in each sequel as he becomes more cartoonishly macho and quicker to deliver amusing one-liners like "Give me some sugar, baby" and "Groovy!". Changing along with Ash mentally and Linda completely, the series itself has metamorphosed from a mostly serious horror film into something that's roughly 75% dark comedy and 25% horror. Indeed, "Army of Darkness" intentionally generates more a lot more laughs than chills. It may turn off fans of serious horror movies, but this zany, sometimes gory, piece of work is definitely recommended for those who enjoy "Dead Alive", "Night of the Demons 2", and "Evil Dead II." It's hard not to laugh out loud when evil, miniature Ashes emerge from a broken mirror and attack the good Ash in every way they can! Of course, that isn't the only funny scene in the entire movie. It's pretty funny to see Ash working at a department store because before he is transplanted to this unlikely setting, he has constantly been fighting monsters in a creeky, old cabin. Just to name a few more oddball moments: a geyser of blood, a carnivorous book, and a goofy-looking, helicopter-like concoction that used to be Ash's car. All in all, "Army of Darkness" is a thoroughly entertaining film, especially for anyone with a dark sense of humor. |
