"Lovers Lane" is yet another one of these movies that begin with a couple being attacked in their car. Just to name a few others, "Final Exam", "The Town That Dreaded Sundown", and "Prom Night IV--Deliver Us From Evil" all start the same way. Also, the killer uses a hook, and that has been done before in movies such as "I Know What You Did Last Summer" and "Campfire Tales". Yes, "Lovers Lane" is highly derivative. Other than a nasty trick involving a strike-anywhere match attached to the bottom of a door to trigger an explosion, there is nothing particularly inventive here. There is just your usual bunch of obnoxious/annoying teenagers being sequentially slashed by a hook-wielding maniac. The plot throws a few quick twists toward the end as an effort to make the story more complex and interesting, but these twists are too abrupt to help the story to any degree. Reducing its appeal even further is the lack of nudity and gore. Perhaps it skimps on the gratuitities because the makers intended to make it tasteful enough for the mainstream audience. This works fine if the movie has a genuinely interesting horror story behind it, but "Lovers Lane" doesn't have such a thing and there is little gore or nudity to partially make up for this shortcoming. The bottom line: "Lovers Lane" is a substandard, watered-down horror movie. You're better off randomly selecting something else from the horror section. The odds are favorable that your random pick will be more entertaining than this one. |

** NOTE: The more dots on the domino, the higher the rating. 12 is a masterpiece. One or no dots is also a masterpiece, if you consider poop to be a gourmet ingredient.** |
