All About Sun Shanghai Tan

For those who missed the drama series Sun Shanghai Tan & A Stage Of Turbulence, here are the summaries in English. These summaries are compiled and translated specially for Sunny HomePage by Kim Anh.

Once Upon A Time In Shanghai...

Starring: Sunny Chan Kam-Hung, Nadia Chan, Lam Ka Tung, Adam Cheng, Carol Cheng, Maggie CheungHY, Bowie Lam, Tam Yew Man, Gallen Lo, Eric Tsang....

Set amidst the backdrop of the turbulent 1920's and 1930's Shanghai, Once Upon a Time in Shanghai chronicles the ill-fated love affair of a young couple. The two, played by Sunny Chan and Nadia Chan, from the beginning meet against many obstacles before finally becoming one, only to then be torn apart. The series is filled with a strong cast including Lam Ka Tung, Adam Cheng, Dodo Cheng, Maggie Cheung, Vivian Leung Siu Bing, and Gallen Lo, to name a few. Adam Cheng plays a man in search of his long lost love, Maggie Cheung, all the while finding new love in Dodo Cheng's character. And Gallen Lo plays Dodo's conniving boyfriend. Vivian Leung plays a poor girl who falls in love with Sunny's character and Lam Ka Tung plays his best friend.

The following is only a brief summary of the love story in the series. It is set in flashback form. A remembrance of the love affair and all those around at the time. Man Keung (Sunny) is thinking about leaving Shanghai, and when he leaves his bar/restaurant he is confronted with headlights from a car. Then we flash to the past with the arrival of Man Keung in Shanghai years ago. He is lost in world of confusion. He is oblivious to the world around him due to the death of his girlfriend during a peace march. Stumbling around he meets up with Adam Cheng briefly. He has come to Shanghai in search of his childhood friend, but a conflict on street throws him into a poor young man, Ding Lic (Lam Ka Tung). Ding Lic finds him modest shelter for the evening in his one room shack. The next morning Man Keung goes out in search of his friend. She is companion to most of Shanghai's prominent men and has many connections in Shanghai business dealings. Through a few meetings Man Keung becomes known in a few circles. And then one evening by chance, Ding Lic meets up with Man Keung in the most awkward of circumstances. Ding Lic, desperate for work, accepts the job of killing a new man in town, which ironically turns out to be Man Keung. Of course, Ding Lic does not go through with it, and instead the two end up good friends. Soon Ding Lic becomes Man Keung's trusting assistant in all his business affairs. Also Man Keung becomes a good friend with Adam Cheng's character.

Meanwhile, Mr. Fung awaits for the homecoming of his daughter, Ching Ching (Nadia), from overseas. Mr. Fung is a big man in Shanghai who is involved in many corrupt business dealings. Man Keung through his later involvement with Adam Cheng is a more or less enemy with this man. One day, by chance, Man Keung walks by the train station. Just outside on the street he comes across a young girl (Vivian) and in this one meeting would prove much more significant later on. Later walking into the station a conflict erupts. A hostage situation occurs involving Ching Ching and a convict. Man Keung steps forward and aids the situation by offering the convict a chance for escape. He drives the convict and Ching Ching out towards safety, and the compassion he shows towards the convict peaks interest in the eyes of Ching Ching. Sadly Mr. Fung's merciless men kill the convict.

Man Keung takes Ching Ching home and they discover a shared interest in books. Soon after Man Keung is invited over to Ching Ching's home and during this meeting Mr. Fung states clearly that Man Keung is to stay away from his daughter. Completely unaware of this new development, Ching Ching has already decided to win Man Keung's heart. Time passes and Ching Ching attempts to charm Man Keung, all the while the poor girl from the station appears again, and Man Keung attempts unsuccessfully to distance himself from Ching Ching. Ding Lic sees Ching Ching's unending devotion towards Man Keung and tries to set the two together. At the same time Vivian's character goes through some difficulties and Man Keung comes to her aid, even giving her a place to stay. In this period of time Vivian falls in love with Man Keung, not knowing he is in love with someone else. Ching Ching discovers Vivian and is heartbroken. Soon, though Vivian becomes heartbroken by Man Keung who reveals that he feels only brotherly love for her. And so she decides to leave Shanghai, but before going she tells Ching Ching that Man Keung actually luvs her and that she should go to him. Sadly, things do not work out and Ching Ching is let down again.

Time passes and misunderstandings occur between Ching Ching and Man Keung resulting in Ching Ching's decision to leave for France. However, due to Ching Ching's love for Man Keung she stays and they are finally united at an Orphanage where he had taught her to fly a kite.

These two lovers are finally together, but tragically events that they are unable to stop lead them to their parting. Man Keung's friend is killed, leaving Man Keung guilt-ridden with his involvement in Mr. Fung's practices. For a time they are a part until a bomb reunites them. A few more months of happiness end in a proposal of marriage by Man Keung. But then Man Keung is informed of Mr. Fung's sunnynadia dealings with the Japanese. Mr. Fung wants Man Keung to help in the smuggling of Japanese weapons into China. Man Keung's repressed patriot feelings erupt and he is determined to put an end to these events and this happens the night before he and Ching Ching are to pick out their wedding rings.

The next day Man Keung is injured due to the events of the night before. He desperately wants to see Ching Ching one last time because now he must flee to Hong Kong for refuge from Mr. Fung's men. However a failed attempt leaves him only to be able to see her from a car window in the distance. All this time Ching Ching is sad and worried, never knowing what is happening. She pleads with her father to help Man Keung, but he lies and tells her he is doing everything he can when in actuality it is him who is behind everything.

The months that Man Keung is away Ching Ching becomes a closer friend with Ding Lic who has now fallen in love with her too. Man Keung meets up with Vivian in Hong Kong, and together they help each other out. Living together with her father and brother. Believing that he will never see Ching Ching again, and seeing Vivian's devotion to him he proposes to her in hopes of a normal and peaceful life. This all backfires when Ching Ching comes to Hong Kong in search of Man Keung. She finds out he is married and Vivian is pregnant with his child. She leaves heartbroken and in pain. And Man Keung is left to wonder whether he made the right decision. Soon a man who is seeking revenge for the death of his Japanese girlfriend kills Man Keung's family while he is at work. Man Keung, however, believes it to be Mr. Fung's men who are behind the killing. Vengeful and angry, he returns to Shanghai with only one thought - Kill Mr. Fung.

By the time he returns, Ding Lic has now set out to win Ching Ching's heart. However, Ching Ching is reluctant to give it away for her heart still belongs to Man Keung. Man Keung is only out for revenge and doesn't have time to think of Ching Ching until it is too late. Hurt and sad by Man Keung's repeated refusals to return with her, she accepts Ding Lic's marriage proposal. Man Keung spends an evening crying over the potential loss of Ching Ching, and on Ching Ching's wedding day runs to the Church to try and stop the wedding. He is flatly rejected. Ding Lic and Ching Ching's marriage is a bittersweet one. In the beginning Ching Ching is a devoted wife, releasing Man Keung from her heart. But eventually, all her hard work fails due to Ding Lic's incessant jealousy. His fear of Ching Ching leaving him for Man Keung and his dishonest acts with her father only drives her further away. In the end she leaves him and Man Keung eventually finds his way back into her heart. Ding Lic is left to only accept defeat and remains friends with both of them.

Through all of this it seems as if the two should end happily after ever, but sadly it doesn't. Man Keung and Ching Ching decide to run away together to France and start a life there. But Man Keung's promise not to kill her father is broken when he does it anyway with the help of Ding Lic. This betrayal leaves Ching Ching angry and upset. With her father's death she is now left all alone, so she decides to leave for France alone. Man Keung asks to leave with her, but he has broken all trust between them and she refuses. And so Ching Ching goes to France without Man Keung.

With the death of Mr Fung, Man Keung and Ding Lic are now a renowned businessman in Shanghai. Man Keung realizes how much he misses Ching Ching and that he simply cannot accept life without her, so he decides to find her. And we flash back to the present. Man Keung is looking at the pictures of his dead wife and Ching Ching before he leaves for his bar/restaurant.

Will Man Keung find Ching Ching? If so would Ching Ching accept him? What about Ding Lic, is he still in love with Ching Ching? For the answers to these and other questions...I guess you'll just have to watch the series!!!

Title: Nadia Teaches Sunny How to KISS
Subtitle : Kissing for an Entire 30 minutes
Source of Information : Nextmedia Magazine
[ Click on the cover page pix for chinese version! ]
Translations of Article : Jessie Sun

The first time both Sunny and Nadia worked together was in the series "New Shanghai Grand".

This time, Nadia not only had to kiss with Sunny, but she also had to lead him and teach him how to kiss her. In the series, Hui Man Keung and Fung Ching Ching shared a really strong yet meaningful romance. So there were lots of scenes of closeness and embrace. Behind the scenes neither Sunny nor Nadia knew each other very well. It was the first time they ever partnered up, therefore, it was quite a challenge to film these love scenes.

They both agreed that everytime they had to film the love scenes, it was quite uncomfortable, but they had to try their best. Citing examples, there was a scene where they both met up along the street, they had to film that one part 5-6 times before it was done properly. It went from embracing to kissing... It lasted for an entire 30 minutes, also Nadia had to lead Sunny through and teach him how... finally he picked it up.

Actually, in the script, it never said they had to kiss that way, the director only needed me (Nadia) to 'tutor' him. After it was finished everyone thought that the scene was okay, but, Nadia wouldn't settle for that, she said it isn't that great. Nadia said that if this were to happen in real life, the lovers wouldn't just hug, they would go right to the kiss. Then Sunny said nervously,"Okay... then why don't we try... umm...why don't you teach me.."

After Nadia gave Sunny the instructions on how to kiss, she said: "kiss the side of my lips and slowly move closer, and cover me..then with some camera work, it will look 'real'." The teaching didn't take long, Sunny caught on in no time. The next step was to learn when to use it. They got on to the filming in less than 2 seconds, when the director yelled: CUT! It was because Sunny hasn't practised long enough and messed up. Luckily, after several NG's, they finally finished the filming and ended up with a perfect scene....

Nadia said, at first when they were kissing, kissing and kissing the forehead, cheeks, eyes, lips... they kissed many times...after the director changed scenes we had to continue kissing many more times...after each kiss, we would turn it into a joke...so that the feeling wouldn't seem so uncomfortable.. cause it was pretty wet...especially the face area!

The series is done now, whether the 'kissing' is perfect, we don't know....

Title : Final Scene of TVB Series Causes Immature Hong Kong Reporters to Ask Stupid Questions

A classic scene from TVB series Once Upon a Time in Shanghai (Sun Shanghai Tan) would be Hui Man Keung's drive-by death scene in front of Bat Lok. Previously Chow Yun Fat's slow motion version left deep impressions. Now in the new series the scene will have two versions, with viewers calling in to decide the fate of Hui Man Keung (Sunny Chan Kam Hung). In order to give the audience a sneak preview, Chan Kam Hung and Nadia Chan Chung Ling will re-enact the scene.

Chan Kam Hung first wore the classic white suit filled with blood bags, when he stepped out of Bat Lok Club, three temporary actors will open fire, with blood flying all over. The blood soaked Chan Kam Hung falls to the floor and struggles, Chan Chung Ling witnesses the horror, sadly goes to Chan Kam Hung and embraces him. Chan Kam Hung's head just touches Chung Chung's chest, one wonders if they feel awkward! sunny3c.jpgThe funny part is Chung Chung has to carry the dying Chan Kam Hung, but she says he is too heavy over and over again and cannot hold back the laughter.

When asked if his head touched Chung Chung's chest, Chan Kam Hung is shocked, "Was it? NO! I really didn't feel it. At the time I was concentrating on acting, I wouldn't notice something like that." Some jokes he once says it would be best in the series he can die in the arms of Ching Ching, should he test that out? He laughingly says everyone's thinking is pretty bad. On the other hand Chung Chung also says the same thing, as she was concentrating on her acting. At the time she had a heavy wool sweater on, so she didn't feel anything. She jokes the one who lost out is the sheep. (But at the time she already took off the sweater to wipe Chan Kam Chung's blood) Later Chung Chung asks everyone not to focus on this, she feels she can avoid kissing scene, but acting sometimes it is difficult to avoid bodies touching. This she doesn't mind, if she is even resistant to this, not only will it scare the other actors, it will scare off those who has work for her.

Chung Chung talks about the two endings, she hopes Hui Man Keung doesn't die, then they can continue to make sequels and also end with a happy ending. Chan Kam Hung too hopes the death isn't required, so Hui Man Keung can go to France with Ching Ching for a new life.

Title : Chow Yun-Fat Complementary of TVB's Remake of THE BUND.....

Days ago Mr. and Mrs. Chow Yun Fat attended the opening ceremony for a charity carnival and to urge people to contribute to the cause. Fat Gor attracted an unbelievable crowd.

Upon returning from the U.S., Fat Gor gained 14 pounds due to the great living environment; but when it is time to go back to work, he would begin exercising and dieting. He also kept an eye on the TVB series Once Upon a Time In Shanghai (Sun Shanghai Tan), a remake of his old series The Bund.

When asked about his reactions, he joked, "Do Do (Carol Cheng Yiu Ling), Chau Guoon (Adam Cheng Siu Chau) etc are each giant stars, how can it not be great!" What about the acting of Sunny Chan Kam Hung, who's playing his former role Hui Man Keung? Fat Gor honestly said he did a good job, and felt that the other two Nadia Chan Chun Ling and Lam Ka Tung both faced the same kind of pressure because it is a remake. Although it is a remake, Fat Gor felt the background, costume, cinematography has high quality and it is a rare large production.

There are two songs which I especially like in the "Sun Shanghai Tan". Those songs are sung by Nadia Chan Chung Ling & Adam Cheng. I have decided to put up the lyrics here so that Sunny's Fans who are not fluent with the chinese language could actually comprehend better with its English translations. Title of Song : "LONGING WISH" - Click here --> [Kei Hui]
['KeiHui' brought to you LIVE courtesy of Valerie N]
Original Singer: Nadia Chan Chung Ling
Serial Song From : Once Upon A Time In Shanghai
Translated By : Jessie Sun

society is in a mess, everything is in a rush
today please allow me
to wander around present time and within my imagination
to meet up with you
although I have decided not to think of you anymore
but in the end I cannot resist
disappointment, loneliness, tears falling are all inside my heart
but through all this I still choose to be with you
alone waiting for you

in the end you will show up
the words of a longing wish
maybe makes me return back to you,sunny/nadia to your words
just like I have decided to continue waiting for you
hoping that you will know my true feelings
the answer to our love is buried deep within you

no matter how everything is such a mess and in such a rush
we finally end up together
how can dreams so quietly accumulated in the heart
it is because of you, of your unspoken words
that you never went on telling me...

This song & the romantic snow scene that went along with it, is truly a hot fave with many viewers. It is sooo very sweet to see Sunny with an umbrella in his hand came into the picture, while Nadia was playing with the snow flakes. She heard his foot-steps & promptly turned around -" what a pleasant surprise!!"- she must have thought. They met up at the stairs and look deep into each others eyes, with their sweet smiles - enough to melt anybody's heart-then walked together under one umbrella, how loving & romantic...

Title of Song : Stubbornness
Original Singer : Adam Cheng
From Serial : Once Upon A Time In Shanghai
Translated By : Jessie Sun

I have never loved anyone before
But I really hope to be with you through this lifetime
If I have done wrong in the past
God has already punished me
By bringing on to me loneliness and heavy responsibilities

People have tried to advise me
They asked me how I could disappoint you
People have taught me how to find happiness in life
People also comforted me in times of sorrow
After we break up and then meet up again
We have already become strangers to one another

I am waiting and still here waiting
All of our past is continuously painful to me
If there is a day where you return
I will allow you to see all my pain bottled up for so long
How I feel like such a guilty person

Stubbornness my whole life, stubborn heart of mine
There is no regret and hatred
Everyday I am waiting and waiting
For you to come closer

Stubbornness my whole life, stubborn heart of mine
I will wait for you forever till the end of time
Waiting for you to reach out your hand
To take back this lonely person before you...

Truly a touching song. I still recalled vividly when this song was being played in the background, Man Keung was in his house feeling very sad, shedding tears bcoz Ching Ching would be marrying Ding Lic the next day...Realizing how much Ching Ching meant to him, he tried to stop the wedding ceremony, alas without success...And the song/lyric truly depicts how he feels...
