| The month began with 14 P-38s attacking a freight train and factory in the vicinity of Mandalay as 16 B-24s bombed Akyab and a railroad station near Rangoon while 6 B-25s damaged a railroad bridge near Nattalin. The 2nd saw 12 P-40s bombing Kamaing, while 6 P-51s hit trucks near Bhamo and a storage area at Indaw. 4 B-25s damaged the Tangon bridge, while 6 P-51s hit the airstrip at Anisakan in the Mandalay area and 6 B-25s hit targets of opportunity south of Mupaw Ga and west of Mogaung, troops near Bhamo, and knocked out a bridge near Gogaung on the 3rd; during the night of the 3rd/4th 16 B-24s bombed oil and power facilities at Yenangyaung, Chauk and Lanywa while 8 P-38s hit the Meiktila Airfield. On the 4th a force of 4 B-25s and more than 120 fighter bombers of various types hit rail lines, storage area and Japanese held villages around Mogaung and Myitkyina. In addition the force supported ground forces near Kamaing and Myitkyina; during the night of the 4th/5th 14 B-24s bombed the Moulmein railroad yards, jetties and a Japanese Headquarters at Nagorn Sawarn, and 25 P-51s and P-38s attacked Aungban and Anisakan. 13 B-24s bombed the railroad from Moulmein to Kanchanaburi, destroying 3 bridges, damaging several others and causing a great deal of damage to track and rolling stock on the 5th. The 6th saw 6 B-25s hitting the railroad and rolling stock at Shwebo, in addition a force of more than 80 fighter bombers along with 2 B-25s hit troop concentrations in the Namti area, supported ground forces northeast of Kamaing, damaged a bridge near Myitkyina, and hit troops, oil dumps and supplies at Mogaung and Manywet. On the 7th 20 P-51s and B-25s hit gun positions at Mawlu, while more than 100 fighter bombers along with 2 B-25s hit numerous targets throughout the Mogaung valley, including fuel dumps and ammunition stores near Manywet, supplies and a railroad station at Myitkyina, supplies and a radio station at Sahmaw, bridges at Nsopzup and supply dumps west of Mogaung, 30 of the fighter-bombers also carried out ground support missions at Shaduzup. On the 8th 200 fighter-bombers and 2 B-25s again pounded Mogaung Valley targets, including Manywet, storage area and the railroad at Mogaung, troop positions at Shaduzup and targets of opportunity around Kamaing, 4 B-25s damaged the bridge and track at Sittang. On the 9th more than 100 fighter-bombers along with a few B-25s hit targets in the Mogaung Valley, bombing town areas, bridges, storage areas and targets of opportunity in support of ground forces. Targets in Mogaung, Kamaing, Laban, Hopin and Nsopzup came in for attention; also on the 9th a force of 25 B-25s and P-51s hit fuel dumps at Indaw, bombed roads near Manhton and supported ground forces at Lasai; 6 B-24s bombed the Mandalay railroad yards, another bombed nearby Maymyo and 13 others mined areas near Mandalay and Magwe; In the Mandalay area 11 P-38s damaged several locomotives and railroad cars, and set a steamer afire near Ywataung. A force of approximately 100 fighter-bombers and several B-25s hit numerous targets including an encampment southwest of Mogaung, positions near Kazu, a railroad and truck park at Myitkyina, a supply area south of Myitkyina, and a bivouac area and supplies at Kamaing on the 10th; some of the fighter-bombers also carried out support of ground forces northeast of Kamaing; more than 40 fighter-bombers and B-25s over the Katha area hit a bridge at Thityabin, troops and supplies at Shwegu, gun positions and troops south of Mawlu, and targets of opportunity; finally, 9 B-24s bombed the railroad station and jetty area at Moulmein, while 4 others mined the mouth of the Tavoy River. On the 11th 17 P-51s and B-25s flew ground support missions and bombed a road near Maungkan, targets in the Mogaung Valley were hit by a force of more than 50 fighter-bombers and 2 B-25s; targets included a Headquarters and stores area at Sahmaw, headquarters and ammunition dump southwest of Mogaung, troops at Myitkyina, and targets of opportunity to the south, a gun position south of Kamaing, and a headquarters at Waingmaw. A force of more than 90 P-40s, A-36s, P-51s, and B-25s over the Mogaung Valley in support of ground forces bombed supply areas and numerous targets of opportunity in the areas around Mogaung, Myitkyina, Kamaing, Taungni and Shaduzup, 5 B-25s knocked out the bridge at Natmauk while 2 other B-25s damaged the Pyu bridge near Rangoon, 5 B-24s bombed Nagorn Sawarn, and 7 others hit the Moulmein railroad station and jetties, and bombed the southeastern part of Prome all on the 12th. The 13th saw a force of more than 90 P-40s, P-51s, A-36s and B-25s carried out ground support missions near Kamaing and hit assorted targets throughout the Mogaung Valley, while 12 B-25s and 11 P-51s supported ground forces at Mawlu. 20 P-40s over the Mogaung Valley attacked a camp at Manywet, and a force of 20 P-51s and 3 B-25s supported ground forces in the Mawlu area on the 14th. On the 15th a force of 12 B-24s attacked shipping and other targets at Port Blair in the Andaman Islands, while 2 P-38s hit the Heho Airfield in Burma destroying several parked aircraft. 12 B-25s bombed a bridge over the Mogaung River, a force of 9 more B-25s along with 12 P-51s hit a warehouse and railroad station at Mohnyin, 9 P-38s destroyed 3 medium bombers at Zayatkwin, and 2 P-51s in the Mandalay area strafed the Anaisakan Airfield destroying 2 aircraft on the 16th. In Burma, 6 P-51s flew in support of ground forces near Meza, 9 P-38s destroyed several aircraft at Heho Airfield, 5 B-24s bombed Ywataung, 26 B-25s and 36 P-51s in support of ground forces at Mawlu bombed a fuel dump at Kin, 13 other P-51s were diverted to intercept a Japanese force over the Imphal, India area, claiming 3 destroyed, all on the 17th. On the 18th a force of 7 B-24s bombed an oil plant at Yenangyaung, while another 5, escorted by 7 P-38s, hit Ywataung; 6 B-25s scored numerous hits on the Mandalay-Shwebo railroad; and a force of 15 B-25s, escorted by 4 P-51s bombed Kamaing and the Myitkyina-Bhamo road. B-25s along with 8 P-51s attacked troops and stores northwest of Banmauk, 10 P-38s hit the airfield near Meiktila, and 5 P-51s attacked troop positions near Mawlu and a bridge at Shweli on the 19th. On the 20th 11 B-25s bombed a bivouac and supply area northwest of Manywet. A force of 12 B-25s and 14 P-51s pounded Indaw and Mawlu, causing several fires in supply dumps and in the target area; 12 B-25s bombed the camp and supply at Kamaing, 8 B-24s bombed Namto and storage and fuel dumps at Lashio, 5 B-25s knocked out 3 bridges in the Tangon area; and 4 P-51s knocked out a bridge at Shweli on the 21st. The 22nd saw 12 B-25s hitting Kamaing, 5 B-25s escorted by 6 P-51s attacking the ammunition and supply areas at Hopin, 3 B-25s and 4 P-51s hitting a village northeast of Bhamo, and 7 P-51s attacking the Gokteik Viaduct. In Burma a force of 24 P-51s, 8 B-25s and 51 RAF Vengances attacked Thetkegyin, Manipur bridge, Tiddim road and Japanese positions at Indaw, while 12 P-38s hit Kangaung Airfield near Meiktila and 21 B-24s bombed the railroads and jetties at Moulmein and Martaban on the 23rd. The 24th saw 8 P-38s pounding positions near Buthidaung and the Myohaing area, more than 100 P-40s, P-51s, A-36s and B-25s bombing storage areas near Kamaing, Mogaung and Hopin, railroads and targets at Myitkyina, Manywet and Chaungwa, a mixed force of 25 B-25s and P-51s hitting Indaw, and several other B-25s bombing Pyingaing 8 B-25s attacked Tiddim road, more than 80 fighter-bombers with 2 B-25s hit a variety of targets at Kamaing, Nsopzup and Mogaung; 12 P-51s hit a Japanese headquarters at Katha and supply huts at Hopin, while near Mandalay 12 B-24s escorted by 21 P-38s hit airfields at Heho, destroying several aircraft in the air and on the ground on the 25th. On the 26th 3 B-24s bombed Akyab, 6 P-38s hit the Tiddim road near Chindwin, 70 fighter-bombers with 3 B-25s pounded numerous targets at Mogaung, Kamaing and several points in the northern part of the Mogaung Valley, while in Mandalay and the surrounding area, 9 B-24s bombed railroad yards and engines sheds as 9 P-38s hit stores and hangers. 12 B-25s hit the Kalemyo storage area, 12 B-25s hit the railroad at 4 points around Shwebo, and a force of almost 150 P-40s, P-51s, A-36s and B-25s blasted troops, fuel dumps, gun positions and a railroad yard at several locations in the Mogaung Valley, including Myitkyina, Mogaung, Namti, Kamaing, Mohnyin, Hopin, Nanyaseik, Chaungwa and Myothit on the 27th. On the 28th 12 P-38s blasted the Tiddin road, a force of more than 80 A-36s, P-40s, P-51s and 1 B-25 returned to hit the same general targets hit the previous day, 7 B-25s knocked out a railroad bridge south of Myingatha and a canal bridge between Ye-u and Kinu. 21 P-38s hit airfields in the Heho area, claiming 8 aircraft destroyed, a force of 25 P-51s and B-25s bombed several buildings at Meza, and 19 B-24s blasted supply dumps at Prome. The Tenth closed out the month with 31 B-25s blasting tank concentrations, bridges, supply dumps and other targets in the vicinity of Kalewa, and 4 B-25s damaging 2 bridges north of Yamethin.
During the month of April 1944 the following changes and movements took place:
On the 9th the detachment of the 24th Combat Mapping Squadron, Tenth Air Force, operating from Hsinching, China transfers to Jorhat, India with F-7s; the squadron is based at Guskhara, India.
On the 15th the 19th Liaison Squadron, US Army Forces, CBI, arrives at Kanchrapara, India with L-5s (first mission is in Jun 44).
The 5th Liaison Squadron, AAF, India-Burma Sector, arrives at Ledo, India from the US with L-5s on the 20th; first mission is 1 May.
On the 22nd the detachment of 24th Combat Mapping Squadron, Tenth Air Force, operating from Jorhat, India with F-7s returns to base at Guskhara.
The 24th Combat Mapping Squadron, 8th Photographic Reconnaissance Group, based at Guskhara, India, sends a detachment to Hsinching, China with F-7s on the 27th
The 19th Liaison Squadron, US Army Forces, CBI, moves from Kanchrapara to Ondal, India with L-1s and L-5s on the 29th.
On the 30th the 5th Liaison Squadron, AAF, India-Burma Sector, moves from Ledo, India to Shaduzup, Burma with L-1s and L-5s; first mission is 1 May.
