March began with attacks on a bridge at Namkwin, the airfield at Myitkyina, and stores and personnel areas at Sawnghka on the 1st. On the 2nd artillery positions at Shingban and the Maingkwan area were hit along with a fuel dump at Myitkyina, trucks along a road near Walawbum, and an encampment on Pagoda Peak near Mogaung. The Ft. White area, airfields at Katha, Mawlu, Shwebo, Lashio, Hsenwi, and Loiwing, railroad targets at Kyaikthin and Kyunhla, fuel storage, supply areas, roads and other targets at Shingban, Myitkyina, Zigyun, Mogaung, Manywet and Washawng, and the Okshitpin bridge were attacked on the 3rd. On the 4th attacks were made on dumps, roads, bivouac area and other targets in the Seton, Pinbaw and Walawbum area, while fighters carried out patrols and armed reconnaissance in the Sumprabum area. Artillery positions, storage areas, roads troop concentrations and bridges in the Zigon, Shingban and Myitkyina areas were hit on the 5th. Bridges at Sawnghka and Sittang, Prong Island, the marshalling yard at Pegu, Lalawng Ga, and bomb dumps near Walawbum were attacked on the 6th. The 7th saw attacks carried out on targets of opportunity from Walawbum to Shaduzup, troop concentrations NW of Shaduzup, and road a road bridge and barges along the Irrawaddy near Shwebo. The airfields at Anisakan, Shwebo, and Onabuck were hit on the 8th, along with bridges at Lalawng Ga and Warazup, and targets of opportunity from Chanmoi to Shaduzup. On the 9th B-24s bombed Tavoy Airfield, Mogaung and Kamaing, B-25s bombed the airstrips at Indaw and Katha, while P-51s, P-40s and A-36s hit storage areas at Pyindaw and supported ground troops at Walawbum and Shaduzup. B-24s returned to Mogaung and Kamaing on the 10th along with B-25s, bombing the town: gun positions S of Walawbum, troops and storage areas W of Mogaung at Pahok, trains near Myitnge and Anisakan, the airfield at Anisakan and the town of Laban were hit that same day by P-40s, P-51s and P-38s. On the 11th P-40s, P-51s, A-36s and B-25s hit fuel and ammunition dumps, gun positions, roads and targets of opportunity in or near Saungka, Pandaw, Walawbum, Labang, Gahtawng, Shaduzup and Mogaung. Troop and supply areas at Shedwiyang and near Kamaing, the town of Shaduzup and storage areas near Manywet and Malakawng were bombed on the 12th. The 13th saw attacks on targets of opportunity neat Shaduzup, the town of Loilaw, supply and ammunition dumps at Warazup and Seton, and a building area N of Namti. Japanese troops, bridges, dumps and villages in the Mogaung Valley were attacked on the 14th. US and British forces combined on the 15th when a force of 31 B-24s and more than 20 RAF Wellingtons and Beaufighters pounded supply dumps and targets of opportunity in the Rangoon area, 8 other B-24s hit barracks near Bangkok, while numerous RAF and US medium bombers and fighter bombers attacked villages, troop positions, ammunitions dumps, tanks and other targets of opportunity in the Chin Hills, Chindwin, Mandalay and the Mogaung Valley. The Nattalin river bridge near Rangoon was hit on the 16th. The 17th saw attacks made on supply dumps in the Kalewa are in the Chin Hills, the Shweli and Mogaung bridges, troop positions and supply dumps near Kamaing, The Myitkyina Airfield, and oil installations at Chauk. B-25s bombed villages and oil storage areas near Kalewa, together with a mixed force of B-24s and RAF Vengeance's; P-51s and B-25s supported ground forces near Chindwin and hit a truck park and supply area near Mandaly, and a mixed force of P-51s, A-36s and P-40s bombed the Kamaing area and river boats neat Katha on the 18th. The next day B-25s and P-38s hit Wuntho, while more than 70 fighter bombers together with B-25s attacked supply dumps, enemy positions and targets of oprtunity, concentrating their attacks in and near Kamaing, Mogaung and Sumprabum, also hit were the barracks and supply areas at Meiktila Airfield near Mandalay, and Indaw. On the 20th the bridge at Lamu, communications and transportation targets in the Katha area, the Moulmein-Martaban area, and supp[ly and fuel dumps at Mogaung, Myitkyina, Sumprabum and Sahmaw were attacked. Bridges near Meza, buildings and targets of opportunity in the Mawlu area, locomotives and trucks in the Banmauk-Indaw area, the oil dumps at Monywa, Manywet, storage areas at Myitkyina, buildings at Kamaing, and warehouses and bridges at Hopin were hit on the 21st. On the 22nd Japanese troops invaded India from Burma, penetrating to within 30 miles of Imphal: over 100 US fighter and fighter bombers operating over the Mogaung attacked troops, storage areas and other targets of opportunity near Katha, B-24s bombed railroad bridges near Rangoon. Kalewa, Kaing, Shwebo, Naba Station, ammunition and fule dumps at Indaw, storage areas at Kamaing, the Moulmein jetty and the Moulmein-Bangkok Railroad were attacked on the 23rd. B-24s and P-38s bombed the Pyingaing dump in the Mandalay ares, B-25s hit the Shwebo railroad yards and nearby factory, P-51s attacked the Gokteik Viaduct, and P-40s bombed Japanese positions near shaduzup on the 24th. On the 25th B-24s hit the Mogaung supply dumps, and P-40s bombed the Kamaing area; Japanese aircraft attacked Allied airfields at Chittagong and Cox's Bazaaar in India, and Anisakan in Burma, 10th AF and RAF interceptors claimed 7 Japanese aircraft destroyed. Troops along the Imphal-Tiddim road near Chindwin, airfields, at Manywet and Myitkyina, bridges, roads and targets of opportunity at Mogaung, Kamaing and Myitkyina, a Japanese bivouac near Bhamo and warehouses at Nankan were bombed on the 26th. Supply dumps at Kamaing, troops in the Myitkyina area, ground forces near Kamaing and bridge and railroad facilities near Meza and Kawlin were attacked on the 27th. The 38th found B-24s boming the Kamaing storage area, fighter bombers and B-25s furnishing ground support in the Sumprabum, Mogaung and Kamaing areas, and bombing storage and town areas at Manywet, Mohnyin and Kamaing. In the 29th P-51s and B-25s hit the railroad and warehouse at Indaw, P-38s and numerous RAF aircraft struck at airfields, railroads, riverboats and other targets in the Mandalay area, B-24s pounded the Victoria Lake region of Rangoon, and fighter bombers and B-25s blasted targets throughout the Mogaung Valley, Anisakan Airfield was hit on the 30th. The 10th ended the month with raids on Japanese positions near the "Broadway" airstrip, the Warong and Pinlebu areas, and railway and railroad targets at Zawchaung. On the 1ts the 93rd Fighter Squadron, 81st Fighter Group arrived at Karachi from Italy equipped with P-47Ds. The 459th Fighter Squadron, 80th Fighter Group moved from Kurmitola to Chittagong with P-38s on the 4th. The 25th Photographic Squadron (H), based at Gushkara with F-7s, sent a detachment to operate from Hsinching, China on the 17th. The 81st Bombardment Squadron (M), 12th Bombnardment Group (M) arrived at Tezgaon with B-25s on the 20th. The 93rd Fighter Squadron, 81st Fighter Group arrived at Karachi from Italy with P-47Ds on the 22nd. Head Quarters, 1st Air Commando Group was activated at Hailakandi, India on the 29th. The group consisted of an HQ plus the following sections: bomber with B-25s, fighter wing with P-51s, light plane with L-1s and L-5s, transport with C-47s, glider with CG-4As and TG-5s, and light cargo with UC-64s. Moves in India during March: 90th Fighter Squadron, 80th Fighter Group, from Jorhat to Moran with P-40s; 118th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron, AAF, India-Burma Sector (attached to Tenth Air Force), based at Gushkara, India, sent detachments to Chakulia and Kharagpur with P-51s.
