It all started with a little Christmas wish...
Early one morning as I was romping through the livingroom checking all
of my hidey-holes to make sure they were secure, I noticed that Mom and
Dad had hung up these big furry socks by the fireplace. I puzzled at
them, and noticed that one had my name on it. I ran to Mom, and
asked, "What are those fuzzy socks for?"
She smiled and stroked my nose and said, "Those are called Christmas
stockings. They are for Santa to fill with goodies when he comes to
visit on Christmas Eve."
"Oh! So I will get goodies too? Since one of them has my name on it?"
"Yes, you certainly will." Mom answered in her musical little voice.
"And if you would like something in particular from Santa, you need to
write him a letter and tell him. He makes a great effort to get you
what you want."
My eyes lit up, and my mind started racing. This was going to require some thought! I was growing up so fast, and I had begun to feel this strange longing in my heart. I sat in my hammock and thought and thought. I watched as Jesse and Nicki, my human "sisters", taunted each other and play fought... it sure looked like fun! A smile crept onto my little whiskered face. A sister! That's what I want, a sister! Someone to share my little home and romp with! Boy, that would be so nice!
I ran up to Mom's leg and grabbed her shoelace to get her attention. She bent down and scooped me up in her arms. It was then that I told Mom what I wanted. She threw back her head and laughed in her funny little way. "So, I guess I'll have to help you write a letter to Santa then, hmmmmm?"
She scurried around (amazing how much she looked like me then!) and
found paper and pen to write my letter. She sat me on her knee, and
helped me to word the following letter:
"Dear Santa,
I have been a very good ferret this year. I help Mom with her housework by dragging out things that have fallen behind the cabinets and finding lost socks (even if I was the cause of them being lost, that still counts doesn't it?) I also help Mom with her diet by making sure she gets lots of exercise ( I take her things so she has to chase me. I know it sounds bad, but it works!) I stopped digging my food into the floor, and I even quit dragging my food dish off my cage wall! I make sure Dad gets up for work on time by rattling my cage door. I'm only about five feet from their bed, so it's not hard to do... and I love the look on Dad's face when he see's how much I care for him! I also try to make everyone happy by doing tricks and funny little things that make them laugh.
Please Santa, what I want most of all is a little sister or brother. I am kind of lonely being the only ferret in the house (even though the cats play with me and I like their company, it's not the same as having another of my own kind). Could you please bring me a little brother or sister, please?
I will be sure to leave you a treat by the tree (please don't mind the
teeth marks... I can only carry them in my teeth). I hope you enjoy it!
Merry Christmas,
Foxx"
Yawn! What a task! I was so tired! Mom placed me gently back in my
little hammock, and I nuzzled her hand and drifted off to sleep. While
I was asleep, Mom took a stroll out to the mailbox and dropped my letter
in.
Days passed, and we were all getting very excited about Christmas!
Finally it was Christmas Eve! Tonight Santa would come! Mom made
brownies and I made sure to leave Santa two of them along with a glass
of milk right next to the tree. Surely he wouldn't miss them there! I
was so very excited... I doubted that I would be able to sleep. Mom let
Jake, Cuddles, Ace and I play for a long time before putting me to bed.
I was able to sleep, it turned out. Mom is a very smart lady!
I awakened the next morning to the squeals of my "sisters" Jesse and
Nicki. They had come downstairs and found all the bounty Santa had
left for them! I jumped up immediately to let Mom know that I was
awake, and wanted to join the fun. It didn't take long for her to
notice my little pink nose sticking between the wires, and she ran over
to let me out.
"Santa left you something, Foxx. He must have thought you were a very
good little girl!" Jesse said.
I looked up at my stocking, but couldn't see anything sticking out of
it. Dad reached up and pulled it off its nail and lowered it down to
me. There was something squirming around inside!
Out of the top of the stocking burst another little pink nose...
much smaller than mine! It was followed by a fuzzy little masked face and
chubby little body. A baby sister! Awwww, she was so cute! I nuzzled
her ear, and she nipped at my nose. I knew we were going to get along
fabulously! I took her over and showed her the Christmas tree and all
the colorful presents underneath. She began playing with the bows and
ribbons, and everyone smiled and laughed.
I wrote a thank you letter to Santa the very next morning (well, Mom
actually wrote it, but you know what I mean). Scully, my new little
sister, and I had all kinds of new things to explore together and I had
so many things to teach her! This was the happiest day of my life...
becoming a big sister! I looked over and saw that Scully had discovered
the wonders of the livingroom trash pail... yes indeed, we were going to get
along just fine!
