My Personal Feelings and Thoughts
continued

Stop Animal AbuseCan you forget the trusting look on their faces?

Could "We" Become Abusers?
What do we do about these situations? How do we know these animals are going to good homes? Or even if "we" will succumb to locking the dog and cat outside while the birds sit in a back room (usually in the dark because then they won't make sounds).

First of all, make sure you are in the position of caring for the cute baby when it matures. Will you be there? Do you have a job that takes you out of town? Are you buying for children that will soon be gone or into so many activities they will eventually neglect the animal? Are you prepared to take over the care of the animal? Can you afford the upkeep? Including proper food and vet care? Are you in a family situation where you feel the cute baby pet could solve the problem of a lack of communication between you and your mate?

These are all very important and should be approached and answered before you make any decision. I feel the most important factor in buying ANY animal...is DO NOT buy on impulse!!!! Period!!!! Walk away, think about it for a few days, or longer if necessary, before making the final decision. It will be the best thing for you and the pet.

Looking into those cute eyes will melt anyone's' heart...walk away...before you say those final words...I'll take him!! If it means putting a deposit to hold the pet until you decide..do it..a few lost dollars is a lot less than a lost animal!! And in the long run will be less expensive.

If you can't afford the deposit......you can't afford the pet...this will be the cheapest part of the bargain. If you then decide you still want the pet after recycling all the pro's and con's then by all means get your pet. The two of you stand a great chance for sharing many happy memories for your future together.

Check out your local humane society for pets who are in need of a good home. In many cases you may be saving their lives. There are so many cute kittens and puppies who can surely steal your heart, but don't overlook the mature cats and dogs they are also looking for good homes.

Check your newspapers for pets who the owners can no longer care for. You will be saving both the pet and the owner (who I'm sure feels sorry/guilty for their pet). This is a good place to look for birds since there are fewer, if any, shelters available for birds, in your area. Another good source is asking your vet. He knows you and the pets available enabling a good match for both. BACK

Alarming Revelations
Our experience with animal abuse
In my research for animal abuse/information I ran across stories that I literally got so upset I cried then I just got angry at the crimes going unpunished or ignored!! It is a well known (or at least I thought it was) fact that a person who causes injury or mutilates animals has reason to concern their community.

A seven year old child that would mutilate their pet is crying out for help!!! Don't say "It's a passing phase of experimenting" it's an inhumane jester sending up a "Flag" for something much deeper that needs to be addressed.

When we lived in Louisiana our property was not fenced in so we leashed our dogs when they were outside alone. While we were on vacation a neighbor watched them for us. She let them out everyday (leashed) and changed their food and water. After a hour she would bring them back inside.

The day before we returned she noticed our Lab (Penny) wasn't acting normal. When we arrived home later the next night Penny didn't look well at all even though she tried desperately to meet us at the door. She finally just laid down and moaned :((((

We called the vet and met him immediately at his office. After cleaning the wound he found Penny had been shot in her hip and leg!! He estimated the wound to be at least two days old. This took place while on her leash!!! She was a sitting target. The bullet fragments could not all be removed.

Each day she was given oral medication, her dressing was changed, and a shot of antibiotics was put directly into the wound. This was not easy on any of us, but within a couple of weeks Penny was up and about with no complaints.

Penny was always a very special pet, never attempting to go after or hurt anyone. She was 13 years old when she was shot and it still amazes me that she never showed any outwardly signs of illness or injury that our neighbor could recognize. It was obvious that she had to be in tremendous pain, yet she was able to hide it from our neighbor and our family when we first arrived home.

Penny was and always had been a house dog, going to the leash only when she went outside. I have no problem with the leash, but I "do" have a very big problem with her being a sitting target!!

There was a bayou that ran directly behind our home. This seemed to be the likely place where someone stood while taking shots at her. We never did find out who shot Penny, but I'm sure it was only in fun....FUN!!! Can you believe that????

Penny had always been a very special family member, but how were we to know that several months later she would become our "hero". She alerted us to our son's drowning, after she was unable to rescue him on her own.

Jacob was 2 1/2 years old at the time. The day before the drowning Jerry (my hubby) ran over Penny's chain, with the lawnmower. Jerry purchased another chain and was going to install it that night. If Penny had been on the chain the ending of the story may have been much different. We never know what will happen in our lives but I found it terribly ironic that the chain that almost cost Penny her own life saved our son's life. We are truly blessed!

I am a FIRM believer in giving proper care to our pets and also taking responsibility for them. I don't believe in allowing pets to run free without complete supervision. Our pets don't belong in our neighbors yards PERIOD!!! They are our pets not theirs. They need to be kept in their own backyard. This is for their protection as well as others. If they are on the loose they stand a greater chance of being injured or abused. Please watch over them they are depending on us. BACK
