History:
Chartwell was born in 1979 when my first Deerhound, Emma, came to live with me. She was my
college graduation present. I had wanted a Scottish Deerhound since first reading about
the breed in the AKC's Complete Dog Book when I was in high school. All of the
traits I wanted in a dog seemed embodied in the Deerhound and I was convinced that this
was the breed for me after meeting my first Deerhounds at the Westminster Kennel Club show
in 1974. Emma was soon joined by my second Deerhound Torquil and I have never had less than two Deerhounds in my family since then.
My kennel logo was designed by Bunnie Austin. The Deerhound is Pip, with whom Bunnie fell in love when she met him in Virginia many years ago. She took many photos of him and used one as the basis for one of her Claymore covers (the January/February 1991 issue). It shows a head study of Pip framed in a heart with the caption "Dear Valentine". I asked Bunnie if she would consider using that head study as the basis for a kennel logo for me and, ever gracious, she agreed and made the design that is now my logo. Here is a larger version of the logo.
Dog Activities:
I participate in conformation shows, lure coursing trials and race meets with my
Deerhounds. I have owner/handled all my dogs in the show ring, finishing four of them thus far, and campaigned both Sophie and Rory to #1 in ASFA lure coursing. I am a licensed ASFA lure coursing judge and currently belong to the Scottish Deerhound Club of America (SDCA), the
Eastern Whippet Association (EWA) and the
Philadelphia Area Sighthound Trials (PHAST). I am a past Vice-President of the SDCA and
on the Board of Directors of both EWA and PHAST as well as past President of MADA. I
also serve on the Board of Directors of the American
Sighthound Field Association (ASFA) as President.
Breeding Program:

This photo of Sophie (age 10 years, 9 months) and her two most successful lure coursing offspring was taken in October 1998 at the ASFA Region 8 Invitational. Between them, they have earned 13 LCM titles and currently rank as the top 3 lifetime ASFA Deerhounds- Rory at #1, Leah at #2 and Sophie at #3.
All the Chartwell dogs are house dogs and companions first. My goal as a breeder is to produce healthy, long-lived, functional hounds who love to run (see photo above)! I have bred only one Deerhound
litter, in 1993 (which was co-bred with Norma Sellers and produced Rory, Leah and siblings), and expect to breed only occasionally in future. Anyone visiting this
webpage who is interested in possibly purchasing a Deerhound puppy should call or write
the SDCA's Breeder Referral contact, Bette Stencil. I
am always happy to answer any questions about the breed, however. Please email me.
Diet and Health:
All the Chartwell hounds are fed a raw diet, based on Dr. Ian Billinghurst's Give Your Dog A Bone. See
the BARF Diet page for information on the raw diet. I follow the conservative vaccination program recommended by Dr. Jean Dodds. All my dogs are thyroid and vWD tested and have their eyes and hearts checked.
