Your subscription to the DEERHOUND-L list has been accepted.
Please save the following for future reference, especially if you are not familiar with LISTSERV. This might look like a waste of disk space now, but in 6 months you will be glad you saved this information when you realize that you cannot remember what lists you are subscribed to, or what is the command to leave the list to avoid filling up your mailbox while you are on vacations. In fact, you should create a new mail folder for subscription confirmation messages like this one, and for the "welcome messages" from the list owners that you will occasionally receive after subscribing to a new list.
To send a message to all the people currently subscribed to the list, just send mail to DEERHOUND-L@APPLE.EASE.LSOFT.COM. This is called "sending mail to the list", because you send mail to a single address and LISTSERV makes copies for all the people who have subscribed. This address (DEERHOUND-L@APPLE.EASE.LSOFT.COM) is also called the "list address". You must never try to send any command to that address, as it would be distributed to all the people who have subscribed. All commands must be sent to the "LISTSERV address", LISTSERV@APPLE.EASE.LSOFT.COM. It is very important to understand the difference between the two, but fortunately it is not complicated. The LISTSERV address is like a FAX number, and the list address is like a normal phone line. If you make your FAX call someone's regular phone number by mistake, it will be an unpleasant experience for him but you will probably be excused the first time. If you do it regularly, however, he will probably get upset and send you a nasty complaint. It is the same with mailing lists, with the difference that you are calling hundreds or thousands of people at the same time, so a lot more people get annoyed if you use the wrong number.
You may leave this list at any time by sending a "SIGNOFF DEERHOUND-L" command to LISTSERV@APPLE.EASE.LSOFT.COM. You can also tell LISTSERV how you want it to confirm the receipt of messages you send to the list. The default for DEERHOUND-L is REPRO, which means that LISTSERV will send you a copy of your own messages, so that you can see that the message was distributed and did not get damaged on the way. After a while you may find that this is getting annoying, especially if your mail program does not tell you that the message is from you when it informs you that the new mail has arrived from DEERHOUND-L. To turn REPRO off, send a "SET DEERHOUND-L NOREPRO" command to LISTSERV. Or you can send a "SET DEERHOUND-L ACK NOREPRO" command and LISTSERV will mail you a short acknowledgement instead, which will look different in your mailbox directory. With most mail programs you will know immediately that this is an acknowledgement you can read later. Finally, you can turn off acknowledgements completely with "SET DEERHOUND-L NOACK NOREPRO".
Contributions sent to this list are automatically archived. You can get a list of the available archive files by sending an "INDEX DEERHOUND-L" command to LISTSERV@APPLE.EASE.LSOFT.COM. You can then order these files with a "GET DEERHOUND-L LOGxxxx" command, or using the LISTSERV's database search facilities. Send an "INFO DATABASE" command for more information on the latter.
List archives are also available on the Internet. The URL is:
http://apple.ease.lsoft.com/archives/deerhound-l.html
To search the list archives, you will be prompted to enter your email address(the one you are using to subscribe to DEERHOUND-L) and choose a password. Be sure to write down the password you choose! Please do not share your password with anyone else as list archives are only available to subscribers. The archives
are searchable by keyword, subject and author's email address. You may also limit your search to a date or range of dates. In addition to searching the archives, it is possible to post messages to the list from the web interface.
Here are some other commands you will find useful. For all of them, you must send email to LISTSERV@APPLE.EASE.LSOFT.COM. Leave the subject line blank and put the appropriate command in the body of the message. Do not type anything after the commands. If you have a signature file, disable that feature before sending your message or your commands may not take effect. Type only the words which are not enclosed in parentheses.
NOTE: If you ever change Internet providers and need to have your subscription to DEERHOUND-L switched to your new email address, please notify List owner Ellen Bonacarti at chartwll@mindspring.com. While you can unsubscribe your old email address and resubscribe with the new one yourself, this means your subscription will revert to the list defaults and any special settings you had chosen, such as NODIGEST or NOREPRO, will be lost. By allowing the List owner to change the address for you, all your special settings will be retained.
Windows95 and MS Exchange cause problems on the list unless they are configured correctly. If you are using MSExchange, the built-in mail program that came with WIN95, be sure that you change the
"properties" for the list's address in your "Personal Address Book" to be sure that you do not send mail in "Microsoft Exchange Rich Text Format". To do this, double click on the address and unclick on the box that says "Always Send To This Recipient In Microsoft Exchange Rich Text Format".
This will eliminate the WINMAIL.DAT file garbage that sometimes
appears at the end of messages. This file contains the font type and color information and other things that can corrupt other mail readers.
You also need to turn off RTF and MIME.
If you are using any other kind of a mail program, it is just good form to be sure that the mail program is sending out mail in "text only" format, as many people don't have a GUI (Graphical User Interface) based reader.
DEERHOUND-L is a discussion forum for owners and fanciers of Scottish Deerhounds. Anything relating to Deerhounds may be discussed here, such as conformation, lure coursing, obedience, health issues, brags, funny stories, etc. This is NOT, however, a place for flame wars, off-topic discussions, comments about specific judges, or blatant commercials (see the advertising guidelines below). Also, the presence of any breeder on this List is not to be construed as a recommendation by the List owner.
Please do not send virus warnings, chain letters or other Internet legends (such as the Neiman Marcus cookie recipe, etc.) to the List. If you have any question about such messages, forward them to the List Owner to review. There are many good Internet sites where you can check on the validity of these messages. Here is a partial list:
Any list member may post an appropriate advertisement (that is, it must be somehow relevant to the members of the List- Deerhound, sighthound, even general dog items are okay) to the List ONCE and only ONCE. Advertisements from non-List members may NOT be forwarded to the List. After the one-time advertisement, *brief* information about the product/business may be included in your .sig file. Anyone breaking or taking advantage of the above rules (inappropriate advertisements, repeat advertisements, excessively long .sig files, posting an advertisement for someone else) may be subject to removal from the List or being placed on permanent review.
ADVERTISEMENTS FOR LITTERS OF PUPPIES OR ANY OTHER DOGS FOR SALE ARE STRICTLY FORBIDDEN. THIS WILL RESULT IN YOUR IMMEDIATE REMOVAL FROM THE LIST.
Questions about and replies to advertisements, as well as responses from the advertiser, must be sent PRIVATELY, not sent to the List as a whole.
All messages posted to DEERHOUND-L are copyright of the original author. Permission to forward, reprint or otherwise use messages that appear on the List *must* be obtained from the original author first. Anyone found breaking this rule may be subject to immediate removal from the List.
I encourage new List members to post an introduction to the List, telling us a little bit about yourself and your hounds or, if you don't already own a Deerhound, asking any questions you might have about the breed. I also ask that you sign your full name, email address and general geographic location (e.g.,
"northern New Jersey, USA") to your posts as some mail readers strip off the headers and without your signature, we won't know who you are. It's also a nice way to discover what other Deerhounders live in your area.
Enjoy Deerhound-L!
