Set-up: Wahey! I won my second game too! The first round having split up people somewhat, the armies scoring similar points fighting each other, I faced off Matt's Vampire Count army in this round. His army consisted of a big unit of Zombies (30), Wight horsemen (15), giant bats (6), bat swarms (3), Banshee, Spirit host, Necromancer, and a Vampire Count. The bat swarms deployed in front of the horsemen, with the Ghouls to their left, and the rest either scattered about of hiding behind a hill. My troops deployed centre right, with the fast stuff to the left (try to outflank his bats, then into his cav), with everything else in a defensive posture. Game: First turn being mine, I did the tradition thing and open fire with all weapons, I devastated the bat swarms, and my bolt throwers almost halved his ghouls, causing looks of pain and consternation. A little general shuffling to align my troops, and then I threw an Assault of Stone, which had the potential of hitting 70% of his army, but was dispelled using a scroll. The Undead hordes rambled forwards, and did no shooting, combat or magic. Second turn, and another successful round of shooting saw off the bats, and the Wraith champion checking behind itself to find very few ghouls left indeed. I attempted a charge on one unit of Giant bats, but my Reavers thought they seemed to fearsome, an event which would haunt the rest of my game, and stayed put. In the magic phase, a Fiery Convocation destroyed the Banshee, and another Assault of Stone was dispelled. Matt's bats charged my Reavers, who took it like the staunch elves they are, and succeeded in winning combat, leaving only a single bat still in combat. My third turn saw more death-dealing, all the bats, all the ghouls (bar the champion), and more Wights were slain, and still not a single elf had perished. The Reavers fled a charge from the Wight horsemen+Vampire, and his Necro went ethereal with the Dark Mist, and skimmed forwards. 4th turn had the Reavers rally, my Hero cut down his Nerco, and the slaying of the Ghoul's unit champion (points!), an out of range Total Power - Banishment was my sad contribution to magic, but a Fiery Convocation started up on his Vampire Count and Wraith champion (all the other horsemen being skewered). More manoeuvring, and the 5th turn saw 3 failed fear tests to charge his General, so my hero went in alone and got cut down (hate that ;-), the Convocation did poorly again in his turn (rolled 3 hits). This Vampire General (and Wraith) did a big charge on my Seaguard, followed by a nasty Gaze of Nagash, and a Drain Life netting him all his points. I really was quite amazed that I still pulled out a win, some shocking dice rolls in the last two turns coupled with the very low winds of magic, but my bolt throwers did magnificently and caused most of my inflicted casualties. Luck factor: I decided to include this, as often games can be made from just one or two lucky rolls. Most notable was the only my Hero charging out of 4 declared charges, everything else failed their fear tests. The other sucky thing was the very low Winds of Magic, Mat got pretty average rolls all around. Analysis: I crapped out at the end. I was going for the big win and it didn't work. Maybe I should have just run away for the last turn (very gamey though), I also forgot I had one Dispel Scroll left, that would have significantly count down my casualties in that last turn. Matt should have deployed his Giant Bats in front of his units, not the swarms, which died real easy, and didn't provide the screening job they were meant to. His Giant Bats were much harder to shoot -1 skirmishing, long range, and multiple wounds. Maybe the swarms are better vs melee stuff (?), but I don't remember any other glaring errors. Still goes to show what some kicking shooting can do on a slow army! Also in other games: Paul's lizardmen gave Mac's Chaos Warrior army a beating. These were both looking to be the most dangerous so far, but Paul manouvered very well, and got some good dice rolls too. I think Mac did some poor tactical choices, but was very unlucky too. Those reptiles could be the tourney winners at this rate, they just look too nasty!
