Today (January 21st 2001) the Guide Association in East Yorkshire has six brand-new qualified Archery Leaders, bringing the total to nine! This will mean increased opportunities for Guides and Senior Section in the county, as well as visitors camping at Guideacres, to try their hand at archery, either on a come-and-try-it basis or for short courses.
All equipment is provided and the site at Guideacres is such that we have been able to create a safe archery range whilst not interfering with the day-to-day camping activities on-site. Sessions need to be pre-booked and groups limited to 12 girls, although larger groups can be split and the others can try some of the other facilities available whilst they wait their turn.
If you are interested in bringing a group, or trying archery for yourself, you might like to consider the following points :
- Archery is perfectly safe when carried out properly
- It is not "hard" as the equipment we use is specially designed for beginners; it does, however, require SOME physical effort
- It is a very enjoyable sport and one which can give a great sense of achievement to even the least "sporty" amongst us
- Almost anyone can take part although with certain medical conditions (eg. muscular or skeletal problems, heart disease, epilepsy etc.) medical advice should be sought beforehand and permission obtained from the participant's GP
- The usual activity and health forms should be filled out, either for a one-day activity or as part of the camp G/A and G/H forms
- Participants need to dress sensibly : it is an outdoor activity and we can't guarantee the weather!
- As with most Guiding activities, long hair MUST be tied back for safety; neckers should be removed or tucked in
