A partnership with the New Jersey/New York Environmental Worker's Training Consortium is the newest program of St. James Social Services . Housed in the Blake House, it is a twenty-week pre-apprenticeship program whose goal is to train economically disadvantaged men and women of color between the ages of 18 - 40 in environmental remediation, carpentry, and construction. At the completion of the program, participants are licensed to conduct several types of environmental work which includes: hazardous materials handling and remedication; asbestos abatement; lead paint abatement; confined space entry and environment site monitoring. In addition to worker training, the program provides computer literacy, math and life skills counseling. Graduates from the first year program have become successfully employed in the areas of hazardous waste removal and the construction trades. |
