TRAPS

Saves, Inc. uses Tomahawk Traps. The bottom of the trap is covered with a small towel or newspaper. Food is placed inside the rear door just behind the spring plate. When the cat steps on the plate, the spring-loaded safety door closes. Immediately after the cat is caught, cover the trap with a towel or blanket to calm its fears. No cat in a trap shuld be left out overnight or unattended and must be checked frequently so that the cat comes to no harm.

A holding cage is necessary for a feral cat after spaying. The female is held from 7 to 10 days indoors. The cage is covered with a sheet to keep the cat calm. Food, water, and a litter box(shredded newspaper) are placed in the cage. A cage can be used to hold sick or injured cats that are being cared for by our volunteers. Soiled materials must be removed from the cage daily.

SHELTERS

Insulated shelters can be provided for feral colonies or for people feeding too many cats to take indoors. Colonies need proper protection from inclement weather as well as a place to hide and commune. A 2 ft. x 3 ft. in. high shelter will house 5 cats. Building instructions can be obtained from either SAVES, Inc. or Alley Cat Allies.
