I put up this page because I don't feel that Bill Gates should dominate our lives. At the least people should make educated opinions about what operating system to use and not just get spoon fed from Mr. Gates about how great Windows is. Windows 95 and Windows 98 aren't even Operating Systems. Read this article before you attempt to disagree with me. To go to the Operating System's home page click the name of the Operating System. For more details about certain Operating Systems click the link BELOW the name of the Operating System. They are now arranged in alphabetical order.
AmigaOS
My
AmigaOS Page
The
AmigaOS is an extremely efficient Operating System. It only runs on the
Motorola 68XXX series. If you use an intel CPU you should just read on
to the next Operating System on the lit or purchase a system (probably
used) with a CPU that is not commonly used anymore. The Operating System
boasts preemptive multitasking and other features that work with low system
requirements such as 1 to 2 MB of RAM.
BeOS
My
BeOS Page
This
OS is so new that it isn't totally complete yet. This is supposed to be
a Media OS that has totally modern features that no other operating system
could ever match. We'll wait and see what happens to this OS.
DOS
My
DOS Page
This
was the Operating System that started it all. It is still in use by over
85% of computer users. Everybody who uses WIndows 3.x, Windows 95 , and
Windows 98 use MS-DOS. If you read the article on the link in my first
paragraph you would know why so I won't explain more. If you want to you
can still surf the net with the free DR-DOS 7.02 OS and the free browser
WebSpyder at Caldera.
This OS is great if you have an older system. This is the only 16 bit Operating
System on this page (all the others are 32 bit).
FreeBSD
My
FreeBSD Page
This
OPerating System is a variation of Unix much like Linux is. Like Linux
it is free (hence its name) and downloadable. Unlike Linux this Operating
System is not Open Source to the large degree that Linux is and is a bit
more standardized. I have not used this Operating System and if you have
any comments that you think I should put on my page please email me from
the envelope icon on the Geoguide on the top of the page.
Linux
My
Linux Page
I
don't use it but from what I hear it is an excellent OS (and free) with
free support from internet users. This OS has excellent software support
through called software called Open Source software. Companies like Netscape,
Oracle, Corel, and IBM are now supporting this rapidly growing Operating
System.
MacOS
My
Macintosh Page
This
is the only OS on this list that is still in the mainstream marketplace
for applications. It is easy to use and easy to configure due to the fact
that this is a proprietary machine. Due to the iMac this platform is now
growing in market share.
OS/2
Warp
My
OS/2 Warp Page
This
OS is great and I use it sometimes. The interface (WPS) is great and changeable.
It has good, but not great hardware and software support.
