Artists with children as subjects in their paintings

Mary Cassatt (1844-1926) American Artist

Mary Cassatt was born in Alleghany City, now a part of Pittsburgh.  She studied at Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, before she traveled to France, Italy, Spain and Belgium for further studies (1866-1873).  Settled in Paris, she met Edgar Degas, who invited her to join the impressionists.

Mary Cassatt is well known for her paintings of domestic life. Her 1897 painting, Maternal Kiss, showing a girl in the arms of  her nurse, is quite typical of Cassatt's work.
