THE 10 COMMANDMENTS
of COUPLE DANCING

sildancers.gif (3963 bytes)These commandments are meant for all social dancers and their partners, not just for guests dancing with their paid DIs. That's for another story.

  1. The leader, normally the man,  acts as the post and leads the sequences. He does not compete for the dance exhibition with the lady.
  2. Never teach your partner on the dance floor, unless asked to do so, much less criticize and give pointers for improvement. Instead lavish your partner with sincere praises for encouragement.
  3. Keep within the Line of Direction (LOD) to avoid colliding with other dancing couples. Partners follow the Line of Direction, an imaginary circle about 10 feet in diameter, as the path of their dance. Movement along this circle is counter-clockwise. Should all pairs on the dance floor be conscious of their own LOD, bumping into each other will be highly minimized.
  4. Look at your partner, not at everything else around the room. This helps connect both partners better for the dance. It is also easier for the lady’s  ‘spotting’ during the turns. The Man should not look down at his partner’s feet. If he is confident with his lead, he will know that the partner is able to follow.
  5. In most Latin dances, the man normally begins by stepping forward with the left foot in Closed Position. The lady does the natural opposite, by stepping back with her right foot.
  6. In most modern dances, start off in either Closed Position or Two-Hand Position. The partners step in mirror image to each other. Thus, when the man steps back with his left foot, the lady steps back with her right foot.
  7. In most dance positions, both partners should try to keep their Center Point of Balance (the solar plexus) facing each other. Exceptions are: during turns, and certain positions when they are facing the same direction or are back-to-back each other.
  8. Each partner has the responsibility of maintaining personal balance by making sure the CPB is over the weighted foot. Thus, the man need not exert too much push or pull to send a lead signal; and the lady does not lean too much nor fall over him.
  9. The Man  should send his lead signals at the right time (usually on the beat before the indicated movement) so his partner does not get lost in the sequence. The Lady follows his lead and should never try to lead him, unless of they have both agreed for her to  back lead him.
  10.  Whenever one partner makes a mistake, the couple should not stop dancing; instead  continue to dance, and use breaks, pauses, syncopations or other moves, to get back into the dance rhythm.

Of course, this is not a complete list of the commandments, but they surely are the top ten to consider in Philippine ballroom dancing.

Line Dancing has always been very popular among ballroom dancers and seldom needs as much discipline as Couple Dancing does.  Synchronicity in rhythm, timing and step patterns, form and stance, and direction are however necessary to perform line dances with others on the same floor.
