LINE OF DANCE

sildancers.gif (3963 bytes)The Line of Dance is that imaginary circle which the couple travels on around the ballroom. Movement is counter-clockwise, and is meant to minimize collisions and contact with other couples on the dance floor. Travelling on the L.O.D. is necessary for the moving dances -- Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, and a few others.

Unfortunately, the LOD is totally non-existent in Philippine ballrooms. It doesn't really matter though, for there are quite a number of tricks gathered from numerous ballroom dancers. A tongue-in-cheek solution to troubles on the floor.

  • Relax. Don't be bothered by the fact that most dancers have not been trained properly. It just so happens that more ballroom dancers prefer and learned the fancy steps. It' s not that they don't care about the LOD. They're just don't realize there's such a thing.
  • If another leader, because of his ignorance, travels against the LOD, and bumps into you or your partner, simply accept  apology. One of the most common words on the floor is "I'm sorry", and they're normally said with much sincerity.
  • If you can't accept his apology, please don't pick a fight right on the floor. Continue to dance and take your time. At the opportune moment though, stick your elbow into his ribs, retaliate without being obvious. And don't forget to promptly extend your apology, even if you're snickering between your teeth. At least now you're even.
  • Remember, Filipinos are very regionalistic and clannish. So if you decide to pick a fight, make sure your back-up is ready in the sidelines. The other group may just decide to gang up on you.
  • It doesn't pay to be arrogant and dance-to-the-book in the social ballroom hall. Knowing the dance rules doesn't mean you're gonna be respected as a good dancer. You may be a good dancer, but if you show your disdain for the bad ones, you  may be up for some rough times. It just doesn't pay.
  • When in the Philippines, dance like the Filipinos. They'll respect you more.
