Places to Visit
Historic-artistic monuments, like The Casino, a modernistic building of the beginning of this century, with its famous mozarabic style lounge. The enclosure of the "Eras de Ia Sal", ancient salt yard where the popular Habanera and polyphony festivals are celebrated. The Roman pier at La Mata. The Silleria bridge in the "Acequion" of Torrevieja. The Archipriestal Church of the beginning of this century, where the image of the Immaculate Conception the towns patron saint, is worshipped. The Municipal creelts and rocks where the waves break in fantastic way. And why not, its inhabitants are the human salt of Torrevieja.
As far as leisure is concerned thereare a lots of things to offer at Torrevieja the whole year round, such as: the Water Park, the Bullring, the Market, the Municipal Theatre, the Winter and Summer Cinemas.
Sport
In Torrevieja the installations and natural conditions for watersports are numerous. An example of this are the Real Club Nautico of Torrevieja and the ‘Puerto Deportivo Marina Internacional’ in which there are more than 1500 mooring places of the highest quality. Both of them are daily publicity for the town, as they frequently receive visits from members of the Royal Family, who here practice their favourite sport.
In the surroundings of Torrevieja at a distance of less than 5 miles from the centre there are 3 golf courses where both national and International championships are played. The Town of Torrevieja offers a Sport Centre, including a hall, tennis courts, Olympic athletics tracks, football fields. gymnastics, sauna, squash and rhythmic gymnastics, with their respective training schools, where more than a thousand youngsters practise their favourite sports. There are also Tennis clubs and sports facilities in the numerous urbanisation’s.
Festivals
Torrevieja being a cosmopolitan and hospitable town, there are all kinds of festivals every month. One of the most popular events in Spain are the Carnivals in which participate thousands of people, forming a show of light, colour, satire and good humour, with as protagonists the masquerades not only from Torrevieja but also from other places in the province of Alicante.
The 'Jolly Week with its processions calls lots of people into the streets, converting these into huge routes of colour, penance and popular religiosity The guilds, with their imagery, represent the passion of Jesus, at the steps of the marches and drumbeat, making to parade the thrones they carry on their shoulders with order and fervour.
The procession at Good Friday at night is one of the most venerated and admired on the Spanish eastern coast.
In May Torrevieja enjoys during one week the most pure Andalusian music and dance you can think of, because In the popular "Feria de Mayo" more than three hundred thousand persons gather round the booths, where numerous persons dressed in their traditional costumes dance the famous "Sevillanas". The merry atmosphere is completed by horse parades, hitchings and tasting of fine wine. The "Feria de Mayo" at Torrevieja is an explosion of Joy and happiness that is shared by all visitors. In June the "Holy Heart Festivities" are celebrated with children games, popular dances and musical performances.
On the 16th of July there is the festivity of the Virgin del Carmen, who is patron saint of the fishermen and seamen, with the tradition of eating paella and all kind of nautical activities.
A special mention is deserved for the traditional Fiestas Patronales (patron saints days) in honour of the Immaculate Conception, celebrated from the 1st to the 17th December every year, during which the main event is the procession in the night of the 8th, assisting people from all over the province and other places of Spain.
