|
Torrevieja, situated next to the sea in the south of the Valencian Community, is surrounded by two large natural saltwater lagoons which form the well-known "Salterns of Torrevieja" the biggest Salt Lakes in Europe. Torrevieja is thirty miles from Alicante, the provincial capital, and about 20 miles from the airports of El Altet and San javier. It has developed in recent years into a first-class tourist centre. |

Its climate is dry and equable throughout the year with 360 days of sunshine and temperatures seldom falling below 18C. Among its welcoming and attractive features are the magnificent beaches, squares, walks, parks, gardens, natural beauty spots and historical monuments. Torrevieja was the home port of the largest fleet of sailing-boats in the Mediterranean, and many examples are still preserved in the harbour. |

| Among the opportunities for recreation Torrevieja places at the disposal of all its visitors are, tennis and golf clubs, a flying club, a municipal sports centre (with covered courts, tennis, fronton, athletics and saunas), as well as everything related to water sports including one of the best yacht Clubs in Spain. The magnificent yachting installations were used for the pre-Olympic trials of 1992, with more than 1500 berths and the corresponding complementary services. There is also a municipal football stadium, bull ring, water park, fairground, theatre and several cinemas. |

| As far as culture and festivals are concerned "Las Habaneras" should not be missed. The tropical, rhythmical songs, which arrived with the salt trade from Cuba, in the voices of the Torrevician sailors, recounting their numerous exploits with the creation of "La Habanera". Every August the unrivalled Torrevieja swings for a week to the 2 x 4 rhythm through its Habaneras and Polyphonic international competitions, which attract the attention of hundreds of thousands of people who watch them live or on television. |
