Azores Islands AçoresFajalUpdated 04.16.2006 down to other choices - Back to Azores index - islands index
In this isle you must see the old volcano Caldeira and also the Capelinhos that's really a natural wander, it's a new developed volcano spreading from the sea about 40 years ago, it originated a totally new piece of coast with a lunar appearance, and obviously destroyed the villages and farms nearby, luckily without victims. Once again it's impossible to describe what you feel walking on these rocks that shows you the strength and power of nature. Once again it worth the journey. I also suggest you to visit the little museum dedicated to the Capelinhos eruption that has many impressive photos and an interesting collection of the press articles about the earthquake and the eruption in 1957. There are also in Fajal some beautiful natural swimming pools, in Varadouro and near the airport, and many attractive beaches near Horta and Ponta de Capelinhos. You can also have a whale-watching trip organized by the world-wide renowned Peter Café, the point of attraction for all the skippers and the sailormen arriving in Horta From Fajal you can easily reach Pico with a 20 minutes boat trip, and so did I. Useful addresses For an exhaustive list of accommodations take a look at the official site of Azores Tourist Office http://www.drtacores.pt/ingl/fai/fai.htm
