Chausey Islands
Updated 04.16.2006 down to other choices - islands index - Back to travels index There is no much to say about this lonely and almost deserted archipelago in the Mont St Michel gulf. If you love untouched nature and loneliness I think you must come. It is composed of a few main islands and a lot of rocks that appear and disappear with the tide flows. Remember that in this place there are the widest tide excursions of the entire globe, until 15 mt of water level difference between high and low tide. The legend tells that you have 365 islands (as the days in a year) at low tide, and that they become 52 (as the weeks in a year) at high tide, you can try to count the rocks! But this credence explains well how mutable is the landscape, with the rise or the withdrawal of the sea. Only Grand Ile (main-land) is inhabited (about 15 in the winter, much more in the good season). There is only a little Hotel with 8 rooms, Fort des Iles, opened from 15 April to 16 October, phone 0233502502, and another restaurant. No cars of course, and no cycles, the best thing to do is to walk from island to island in the low tide and to practice the walk fishing. Beware to the tide schedules, the rise of the sea is really fast and dangerous. It is a really interesting site for birdwatchers. The ferry depart is at Grenville (Jolie France II phone 0233503181) and the journey is about 45 mn. Links about Chausey:
