Guadeloupe Martinique

Martinique Island is another overseas department of France and so it is also a marginal European Community territory, with quite good economical conditions.

Martinique is a magnificent Caribbean island characterized by a great variety of different landscapes. It has a its highest peak at the volcano Montagne Pelée, whose eruption in 1909 destroyed the city of Saint-Pierre. The northwestern side of the island is covered by the luxuriant vegetation of the rain forest and is a very interesting area for trekking. Martinique has a lot of magnificent beaches with crystal clear warm waters where to take a bath is an incommensurable pleasure.

The eastern coast has a reef with large lagoons filled with superb islets. Near Le François the lagoon is very large and, in proximity of the reef, there are areas of low water whose bottom is constituted by coralline white sand. They are called white shoals, the most celebrated is the “Bagnoire de Josephine”, here is fantastic to take a bath while you taste a ti’punch. The best way to do that is to hire a fisherman boat and to avoid the organized day-cruises.

Where to go:

Anse Coulevre, Anse Lévrier, Anse à Voile, superb black volcanic beaches at the north of Saint-Pierre. The last two require a 15 minutes walking and are almost desert also in the weekends.
Grande Anse des Salines, white sand beach, magnificent but a little crowded
Grande Anse du Diamant, wonderful landscape on the Diamant islet.
Ilets du François and Bagnoire de Josephine, a must.
Plage Tartane

Suggestions:

Chez Didine, near the Anse Michel, phone 0596767328. A simple and very good restaurant.

Restaurant Moana at the Anse Coulevre, magic place in a tropical garden with a superb view on the beach and the sea.

Creole cooking is really interesting, try the on the road vendors of foods and ices. Very interesting the coco ice (sorbet de coco), the fried cod (accras de morue) and the smoked chicken (poulet boucanée), all very cheap.

Buy old rums at the distilleries and drink the ti' punch, a very good cocktail.

Try the Caribbean style of life, laziness and pleasure.
