On the morning of January 3, 1999, we boarded the SuperFerry in Manila for a 21 hour relaxing boat trip to Cebu in the Central Philippines.  It wasn't exactly the Love Boat, but then fortunately it wasn't a Titanic sized disaster either.  Even Olive, the least seaworthy member of the Barnes crew, got into the adventure.

Magellan was the first Westerner to come to the Philippines in 1521.  Mac and Maya are standing in front of a monument to Lapu-Lapu, the Cebuano hero who killed him.  A curious Filipino contradiction is very evident in Cebu.  They celebrate both the killing of the Spaniards and the coming of Christianity.

We stayed at a resort on Mactan Island in Cebu called Plantation Bay.  It has very interesting plantation style architecture and beautiful landscaping.  All the rooms face an artificial lagoon.  There is also a small beach there.

Wonderful seafood in Cebu.  Our favorite was an open-air seafood restaurant by the shore where you pick fresh seafood from the adjoining market and they cook it any way you like.  Olive and Mac especially liked the Singapore style chili crab.  The huge crabs were like our dungenous crab.  They also had great shrimp, squid and fish.

After a few days, the kids had tried everything at Plantation Bay and we decided to move to the Island Shangri-La.  This resort is even bigger and has a great beach, more activities, and music and cultural shows in the evening.  We spent our last day there.
