Day 1 - Birenthanti to Ulleri
The Jomsom Trek is one
of the most trekked routes in Nepal and hence, has frequent tea houses and lodges along
the route. It is rare to walk for more than an hour without seeing some sort of facility
that caters to trekkers. Food and lodging is cheap all along the route so camping and
cooking for oneself is not necessary, although acceptable if desired. The trekking route
begins in Baglung, a 1 1/2 hour bus or taxi ride from Pokhara.
|
From Baglung it is a short 15 to 20 minute walk to the village of Birenthanti
at 1100 metres, the first village on the trek and the site of the first police check post.
From Birenthanti we begin the ascent which begins slowly but quickly turns into a steep
arduous climb that will last for the next two days. As we began to climb the terrain is
lush and green with animals grazing along the terraced hillside. The trail is a mixture of
steadily rising trail and steep stone steps. |
Several hours later we reach Hille at 1500 metres, the first major village
along this part of the route. After Hille the trail leads through the village of
Tikedungha about 20 to 30 minutes past Hille.
From Tikedungha the trail is an endless and sometimes brutal climb up steep steps that
lead to the village of Ulleri at 2070 metres. Although the climb from Hille to Ulleri was
only about 600 metres it is basically straight up and when we reached Ulleri it felt like
our legs could go no further. |
