Day 2 - Ulleri to Ghorapani
As you begin to climb towards Ghorapani you get your first close up view of the Annapurna
Mountain range. Just out of Ulleri there are great views of Annapurna South (7273 metres)
and Hiunchuli.
|
The trail from Ulleri is again steep with more and more steps. Much of this
part of the trail passes through heavily forested terrain with several streams and
waterfalls.
Along the trail you pass many pony
caravans and porters carrying goods up and down the trails to the many villages along the
way. Since some parts of the trail have steep drop offs, its wise to stay on the inside of
the trail as you can be easily pushed off the side by the ponies or their loads. |
While there are many pony caravans that transport goods, porters are the main
method of moving goods throughout the many small and isolated villages in Nepal.
Porters are also the
backbone of the trekking industry as many carry supplies and packs for individual trekkers
and also for the large organized trekking parties. The porters move up and down the trails
agilely carrying extremely large loads, many barefooted or wearing thongs. |
The climb from Ulleri to Ghorapani at 2800 metres is steep but fortunately
short, and can be done in about 4 hours. You can go on past Ghorapani but it is wise to
stay here and make the trip up to Poon Hill for the morning sunrise over the Annapurnas.
At 2800 metres the temperatures are noticeably cooler and dropped down to single digits at
night. |
