From Ghorapani the day begins with the mandatory early
morning excursion to Poon Hill to watch the sunrise over the Annapurnas.
At 5:00 AM you join the long and steady stream of half-asleep
trekkers making their way up to Poon Hill, about 300 metres above Ghorapani.
Again, the almost one hour climb is straight up and the climbing is made
increasingly more difficult by the higher elevation. However, the view from Poon Hill is
breathtaking and the panorama of Dhaulagiri I, Tukuche, Nilgiri, Annapurna I, and
Annapurna South make it something that definitely should not be missed. There were over
100 people in the chilly morning air at Poon Hill.
After descending from Poon Hill and eating breakfast the steep decent to
Tatopani begins. The first part of the trail descends rapidly through some forested areas
to Chitre at 2400 metres. After this the trail levels a little as you pass through a large
landslide and terraced areas to Sikha at 2000 metres. Sikha is roughly halfway to Tatopani
and is a good resting and eating place.
From Sikha the trail slowly descends several hundred metres to a clearing where you first
see the Kali Ghandaki River. After this it is a steep knee-breaking 500 metre decent to
Tatopani. Since Tatopani is at a much lower elevation the warmer temperatures are a
welcome break from the cooler temperatures at Ghorapani.
Tatopani also has great hot springs that are a soothing relief for tired legs and aching
knees. If you have time, Tatopani is a good place to spend a rest day as it is a fairly
busy village with enough to occupy you for one day. It also has a good selection of guest
houses with such amenities as hot water and flush toilets, and restaurants with French
pastries and deserts.
