Day 4 - Tatopani to Ghasa

Pony Caravan Along the Kali Gandaki RiverWaking up in Tatopani we quickly realize that although ascending feels more difficult, descending leaves the joints and muscles in a lot worse shape. The effects of our descent of the day before are painfully obvious and getting moving is very difficult.

Kali Gandaki River

On the way out of Tatopani, after registering at the police check post, you get a good view of Nilgiri South. The trail follows the Kali Ghandaki river gorge and slowly ascends through the village of Dana at 1400 metres to Rupse Chahara at 1550 metres. The main attraction in Rupse Chahara is a large waterfall with a swimming hole at the bottom.

Suspension BridgeAfter leaving Rupse Chahara, the trail climbs along some steep terrain and crisscrosses the Kali Ghandaki by numerous, and sometimes treacherous, suspension bridges.

Kali Gandaki
As the trail progresses up the Kali Ghandaki, the terrain noticeably changes from lush green terraced villages to a more densely forested rocky landscape.  After crossing a suspension bridge and a short climb we arrived in the village of Ghasa at 2000 metres.
