THE SETLIST: Oceansize Ain't No Right Then She Did Stop Three Days Mountain Song |
Been Caught Stealing Summertime Rolls Jane Says Classic Girl Chip Away Ted Just Admit It... |
After a bit of a wait, Fishbone came on and warmed up the crowd. They played a pretty good set, and Norwood Fisher was awsome, but not much competition for Perry. (Is anyone ever?)
After Fishbone finished their set, there was hardly any commotion down in the stage, which made me wonder why nobody was setting Dave's amps or Steve's set.
The only sign of life on the stage was constant glimpses of Dave's tech, that guy that always wears that "Yes sir, MR. Navarro" shirt, I think his name is Dave also. Anyway, he was setting up Dave's pedalboard and some candles, but that's all that was set up. After about at least 25 minutes of waiting, the curtain that had been behind Fishbone all throughout their set was lifted, and there stood the Mighty Jane's Addiction, in full gear, with Perry wearing a crazy red and white cowboy outfit with straps hanging from the sleaves and Dave wearing a silver robe for only a couple of minutes.
They opened their set with the mindfucking ocean size, which was played so hardcore that the audience was almost as loud as the band. Then they moved along to ain't no right, which was also beautifully done, with flea doing a pretty good job and not fucking things up (or should I say funking). The songs stayed true to their nature.
The next song was stop, then then she did, then mountain song, then three days, which was a bit shorter than usual when live, but still as effectively beautiful. By now, exotic dancers filled the stage climbing poles and surrounding the band. Then been caught stealing, whch had gogo dancers with robber masks come in and throw stuff at the crowd from bags they were carring. Then summertime rolls, which had perry singing from a suspended platform right above the pit crowd. After that, the band stood ground in a smaller 2nd stage across from the main stage and there they played Jane Says, ever the crowd pleaser. That was followed by the great chip away (although, I was seated in the first balcony right above the second stage so i couln't see what they were drumming on, when i used to go to the early shows, the beat on anything around them, coolers mostly.) Then classic girl was played, this being the first time I have ever heard that song live, it was great. Then when the band disapeared from the stage it seamed like the show was over, but the band reapeared in the main stage and finished the show with the raw, furious ted...just admit it.
I felt that the show, while the songs were not rare, still kicked ass. And for fifteen bucks, we shouldn't complain. I heard a lot of people pissed off because the show was too short. The average Jane's show is only about 13 songs, and here they played 12. If you didn't like it, don't see them again. This shows are a blessing to those who didn't get to see the band the first time around. I was only 13 when they broke up, but lucky enought to having seen them various times before nothing's shocking and through out ritual. And now my kid brother got to see them and he's also 13. But I know alot of people that didn't get to and are grateful for their chance.
Jane's shouldn't have to play 18 song sets just to satisfy some confused people. Jane's is the greatest band, and just a few songs are enough to make a great show.
