There is a rising problem in americas society today, and that is childhood sexual abuse. every year, children are being sexually abused by relatives, aquintances, and strangers. I like many others, am a survivor, felt alone, no one to turn to. But someone showed me that I was not alone, and that was the greatest gift of all. I was finally able to get help, and start healing. There are several other survivors and one was courageous enough to let me use his story for this, and I want to thank him. Woody was 5 yrs old when he was abused by a babysitter, this lasted for 5 yrs, until one terrible night when he ran away, lived on the streets of New York, and not wanting to face what happened, and not wanting to live. This has happened to many children. It is a tragedy, and it needs to stop now. Statistics show that REPORTED cases of child sex abuse are dropping, but yet each year, 90 to 95% of cases go unreported. 38% of girls and 16% of boys are abused before the age of 18 each year. All people who work with children are required to report suspected sex abuse to authority, but there are no exact #s available to show how many do so. Child sexual abuse is traumatic, and can have life long effects on the survivor, and there are many signs of sexual abuse that parents need to be aware of. Among these there is the reluctulance to go to bed, or spend time with an aquintance, depression, moodiness and last but not least, self destructive behavior. So what can we do to stop another child from living through this trauma? We can write to legislators, check pending laws, become an advocate for childrens rights, or we can reach out to the abusers and let them know that there is help available to them. In researching this, I found an excellent website called stop it now. They have a lot of useful information for survivors and how to help in your community. There is help available, and it is time to break the silence, stop the abuse of children. Angel, a survivor of childhood sexual abuse |
