The scariest part about Halloween is what can happen on that night. By taking a few extra precautions you can help assure your child will be safe and sound that night. Read on, if you dare!
Its that time of year again when spooks and monsters come out at night, walk the streets, and terrorizes us! Of course most of those spooks and monsters are kids dressed up for Halloween. Kids love Halloween and who can blame them. Wouldn't you like to dress us in a costume, have complete strangers "Ohh" and "Ahh" over your get-up, and give you candy?
COSTUMES
Be safe, not sorry
* Avoid using masks which can obstruct a child's vision.
Here are a few suggestions to keep your child safe when it comes to dressing up.
* When using make-up make sure it is non-toxic and hypoallergenic.
* Kids should wear costumes made from flame-retardant materials.
* Avoid over-sized costumes, anything that can be stepped on, over-sized shoes, or high heels. A child may trip and fall, causing injury.
* Attach reflective tape or decals so kids are more visible. Carrying a flash light is also a good idea.
CANDY
Check it before you eat it
* Go with your child so you know what he/she is getting and from where.
Lets face it, candy is one of the best parts of Halloween. Its unfortunate that each year children are poisoned by tainted candy. Here are a few precautions you can take to help prevent your child becoming ill or worse.
* Check all candy before you allow your child to eat any of it.
* Talk to your kids about the potential danger they could face from snacking on candy before you check it for them.
YOUR PART
What can I do to make this a safe holiday?
* If you are giving away treats for Halloween, give non-edible items instead such as pencils, erasers, or toys.
Here are a few things you can do to make this Halloween safe for you, your kids, and others.
* Remove anything from the walkway up to your front door that kids and their parents might trip over.
* Check outdoor lighting and replace any bulbs that have burned-out.
* Look out for any suspecious people in the area that might be loitering about and/or approaching children. Call your local police and report them.
* Remind your kids not to talk to strangers, not to get in anyone's car or house, and not to go anywhere without first letting you know about it. Tell them they should call 911 if someone tries to harm, kidnap, or lure them into going with them.
