What's New:
Should I breast feed my baby?
Babies that are breast fed tend experience less diarrhea and constipation because breast milk is easier to digest. Another plus is their bowel movements are less odorous.
An added bonus to breast feeding is the time spent and closeness developed between mother and child. For years, mothers have talked about the special bond established while breast feeding. Another positive incentive is that breast milk is more economical than comercial formulas.
Everything a mother eats and drinks will affect the baby through the breast milk so it is very important to consider if it would be better to breast feed or not based on your diet and life style. A mother that smokes could possibly cause more harm than good by breast feeding. Consult your health care provider with any concerns you may have or before you take any medication to see if and how it will affect your baby.
When it comes to babies, there are so many important decisions to make. Breast feeding is one of those decisions. Before you make up your mind one way or the other, read about the pros and cons of breast feeding.
PROS
What is so great about breast feeding?
Breast milk is the healthiest food for your baby. It contains natural immunity and many nutrients that can't be duplicated in formulas. Breast feeding provides the baby with antibodies that help fight infection. Your baby will get all the nutrients needed from your milk, provided you are eating the right foods to begin with.
In order to breast feed you have to be present when your baby is hungry, but this is not always possible with the busy schedules everyone has these days. Breast feeding can be inconvenient for working mothers who obviously are not taking care of their babies during 9 to 5. There are breast pumps mothers can use to express milk and that is always an option. However, the experience of breast feeding is missed.
No matter if you breast feed or not, make sure you are comfortable with the decision. Don't do it just because your Dr., family, or friends pressured you into it. Don't decide against it just because a friend who breast fed said her breasts haven't been the same since. Do your research, think of your baby, think of yourself, and decide. Every woman is different and what might work for one mom might not work for another. Most importantly, enjoy your baby!
