BOONTJIESKLOOF
(Little Bean's Ravine)

Disguised valleys of old inhabitance,
moulded mounds of rocks overhanging
a Bushman's drawing room.

Walls bedecked with personally
painted anecdotes of his time
& matters of importance.

Brooding, bubbling brook as bath,
pool & washing basin.

The bedroom suite hanging high
with sunrise & sunset views.

Charred embers of breakfast's fire,
the base of supper's feast.
Christmas beetle soaring chorus
simulating heat haze of midday's laze.

Family rock for meal meetings & then
lookout rock for first sight
of tomorrow's meat.

The languid lease of timeless
existence in a past mind.

CASTAWAY
Contained in a haven of inner tranquillity,
subjectively escaping life's sterility
with minimum ability,
using minor agility

to leap from the Western cushion,
cushioned on a layer of fat
from which one can't peer
& see what's really there.

Cut the shrouds,
cast the ropes to the sea
& let the boat float,
bobbing on waves of uncertainty.

Then REORIENT yourself,
& then the gulf
will turn to passage
& you your vessel will guide
to a higher harbour.
