Gustav Mahler : Music from China "The Song of the Earth" Benefit Gala at the Embassy of Austria on March 16, 2005, 7:00 pm. Under the gracious patronage of Her Excellency Eva Nowotny, Ambassador of Austria, with the participation of Music from China. Delores Ziegler, mezzo soprano, Post-Classical Ensemble, Angel Gil-Ordonez, conductor. Program: 7:00 pm Reception, 7:30 pm Concert, 8:30 pm Buffet/Reception. Black Tie. Tickets: $150. Sponsors include the American-Austrian Society.

Afternoon with St Nikolaus and Krampus on Sunday, December 4, 2005, 3 pm, held at the Embassy of Austria under the patronage of H.E. The Ambassador of Austria, Dr. Eva Nowotny. There were also music and refreshments at this annual charity event for the benefit of children in SOS Villages in Austria and the United States. Children 2-14 years old ($10 each), Adults ($15 each).

A Wiener Kaffeehaus Jause on Sunday, April 18, 2004, 3-5 pm, at the Embassy of Austria. Admission was $15 for members, $20 for non-members.
English-Austrian Picnic on May 16, 2004. The American-Austrian Society President Johannes Willenpart invited members and guests to join him and his wife Andrea for an English-Austrian Picnic. In Cooperation with the Rolls-Royce Owners Club. Members were to bring their own picnic and blankets. There was be live music. Austrian wine, soft drinks, and English and Austrian hors d'oeuvres were served. The Setting: On the banks of the Tred Avon River (near Easton, Maryland). Andrea and Johannes had just completed a three year renovation to Avondale, dating back to 1774. The Chesapeake Region Rolls Royce / Bentley Owners Association were on hand with Vintage Cars to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the historic meeting on May 4, 1904 of the Honorable Charles Stewart Rolls and Sir Frederick Henry Royce which led to the formation of Rolls-Royce Ltd. Admission was free to members and their immediate families if a family membership. Non-members: $100.00.

50th Anniversary Celebration on October 16, 2004 at the Embassy of Austria. (Invitation).
The American-Austrian Society celebrated the 50th Anniversary of its founding with an elegant white-tie Ball. The wonderful 14-piece Con Brio Orchestra swept us off our feet with the music of Strauss, Waldteufel and Lehar. The evening
began with a dance performance and there was a world-class vocal performance later in the evening. There were splendid door prizes as well. An extensive dessert buffet in the true Austrian tradition awaited us, accompanied by all Austrian wines and champagnes. The doors of the Austrian Embassy opened at 8:00 PM and we danced until 1:00 AM. Valet parking was available. Members received their invitations by mail, and we opened the registration to non-members. Tickets for members were $90 per person, for guests $120 per person.

H.E. The Ambassador of Austria, Dr. Eva Nowotny. (Invitation). Good Saint Nikolaus made his annual visit, accompanied by Krampus, bringing sweets (and refreshments) to all good children and adults and telling tales of Christmases past. There was Christmas caroling in German and English. $5.00 of each ticket sold was to be a direct contribution to SOS Children's Villages in Austria and the United States. (In 1949 the first SOS Children's Village was founded in
Imst, Austria, by Herman Gmeiner. SOS Children's Villages provide
stable homes and families for children in need. SOS Children's
Villages is active in over 130 countries and territories today,
including the United States and Austria. Regular contributions by
sponsors help to ensure the children's well-being, education and
integration into their local community.) Tickets: $15 for adults, $10 for children 2 to 14 years.

Slide Lecture by Prof. Dr. Anton Wilhelm: The Return to Vienna of a Significant Part of Austrian Cultural Heritage. On Tuesday, January 28, 2003, 7 pm, art historian Dr. Wilhelm talked about the 400-year history of the privately-owned "Liechtenstein Gallery," which had been housed in Liechtenstein's Vaduz Castle for 63 years and now will be returned to Vienna; he showed slides of many of the gallery's pieces of art and told about the artists and their lives. At the Embassy of Austria. Sponsored by the American-Austrian Society. Free admission. Followed by a reception.

Austrian Wine Tasting, and Meet Wine Makers from Austria, Thursday, February 27, 6:30-9 pm, at the Embassy of Austria. Tickets: $10 for members, $15 for non-members. Wine served with refreshments, door prizes. Guests tasted wines from four wine-growing regions: Lower Austria, Burgenland, Styria, Vienna, and met Austrian acclaimed wine makers Anton Bauer, Gustav Strauss, Leo Hillinger, Marin Mittelbach. In addition to their wines, guests had a chance to taste more wines from Weingut Proidl, who is said to be one of the best Riesling producers in Austria, and there was red wine from Stift Klosterneuburg, as well as dessert wines from Steindorfer. Sponsored by Select Wines, Inc., Chantilly, Virginia. Cheese & bread delivered by Sutton Place Gourmet.

Tickets: $10 members, $15 non-members. Austrian Certified master Chef Willi Jonach tempted palates with his excellent assortment of belegte Broetchen, a variety of Austrian pastries that included Vienna's finest Apfelstrudel, Kaffee mit Schlag, and tea. Morever, he disclosed secrets for making and baking all these delicacies. A typical Austrian "Kaffeehaus-Atmosphere" in the elegant environment of the Austrian Embassy.

"Advent Evening 2003" Beloved Austrian actress Kammerschauspielerin Johanna Matz appeared at the Austrian Embassy for an Advent reading (in German) sponsored by the American-Austrian Society. Johanna Matz read holiday stories in German by Abraham a Santa Clara, Oscar Wilde, Christian Andersen, Wilhelm Busch, Egon Fridell, Peter Rosegger. Daniel Jones, Member and Officer of the Washington (DC) Area Folk Harp Society, will provide seasonal music on the Folk Harp to complement the reading. Candlelight reception following the program. Admission: $ 15; A-AS members: $ 10. Ms. Matz studied dance and acting at the Max Reinhardt Seminar, Vienna. Her acting career includes numerous major parts at Vienna's Burgtheater and other world famous theaters, more than 40 movie and TV productions, literature reading performances. |
Adventnachmittag with St. Nikolaus and Krampus on Sunday, December 7, 2003, 3 pm, for children and families, at the Austrian Embassy. The children of the Trinity Choristers from the Upperville Episcopal Church rang their bells and sang for the event. Tickets: $15 for adults, $10 for children 2 to 14 years.

Adventnachmittag with St. Nikolaus and Krampus on Sunday, December 8, 2002, 3 pm, for children and families, held at the Embassy of Austria. St. Nikolaus and Krampus came for a visit. Nikolo told his story and gave each child a Nikolo Sackerl. The Maret School Choir performed Christmas carols. Sweet treats for children and adults afterwards.

Summer Heurigen at Piedmont Vineyards, 25460 Halfway Road, The Plains (near Middleburg), VA. on Sunday, August 25 - 2-5 pm. There were delicious wines from Piedmont Vineyards, wonderful food by Alibi Catering, friendly conversation, and Austrian music and dancing with the Alpine Dancers & Singers.
